'83 Topps baseball rip

This is probably the most boring rip you guys will ever see. I went in halves on a box of '83 Topps baseball with a friend w/ the hopes of landing a few gradeable cards. These are the highlights from my half. I got quite a few HOFers but most of them had a bad corner or were OC. I'm not sure any of the cards from my half have a shot at 10 but I had to show some of them so these are the 4 "highlights" of the box. Obviously the McGee isn't gradeable but I was a big fan of his growing up so pulling his rookie from a pack is pretty sweet. The team leaders cards are pretty sharp, probably the sharpest cards I pulled, though they probably aren't submittable unless I'm desperate to submit something. The Boggs rookie is pretty nice. Slightly OC but nice. All in all it was a fun rip but the other half will have to produce something good in order to recoup the money that we have into the box. Thanks for looking.

  • Well at least the good news is that you only have 270 OC cards instead of 540 since you split the box.

Well after talking to my friend I went ahead and ripped the second half of the box. The good news is that I pulled both the Sandberg and the Gwynn. I'll let you see the bad news.

Man, you got beat up pretty hard on centering, but at least you pulled each of the big 3. When are you buying the next box?

Last year I bought 2 boxes of 83 Topps-- wax packs . The pain was intense as I pulled only 9 cards that I thought would remotely grade a 9 or better. I've had in years past , been very blessed in my pulls. Those 2 boxes REALLY hurt my rip potential.

With the state of the economy, its going to be cheaper to buy some more boxes and begin submitting again.I'm hoping for a little less pain.

Chris thats sweet. Believe it or not ive always wanted the Sandberg from that year and never got one. Love the 83's. I bought some Michigan test packs about 7 years ago and still have two unopened. Can't get myself to open them.

I ripped 10 1983 rack packs last year and lots of cellos and got ZERO Gwynns, Ripkens, Sandbergs, or Boggs. It reminded me of the days when I rode my bike to the liquor store to try and get a Rickey Rookie card. You are still lucky.

Nice pulls on the key RC's. 83 has been my favorite set of the 80s

    Thanks for sharing.

I still have quite a few of the HOF RCs from that year. Sentimental value for sure.

    very cool.

remember having many of those cards back in teh day.

i thought willie mcghee was the card you wanted to get,
but then again i also loved tim raines cards b/c of their potential trading value.

  • Chris I can tell you that even though you had centering issues you still managed to pull more star power out of one box than I did out of three of the Michigan boxes. It's always fun ripping something from your childhood!
  • Don't question yourself on your choice of wax over Michigan. You would have been lucky to get one of the big 3 from a Michigan box and there is about 90% chance that it would have been way OC.

I'm really not that disappointed with the box. It had most of the stars in it and all 3 of the big rookies (4 if you count McGee image). My biggest mistake was going into the rip trying to make money and not just for the sake of a fun rip. I may submit a couple of these just to test my grading ability (which is suspect at best).

Looks like you did pretty good IMO.

Many boxes that were put away were from cases that people knew the centering was probably just like that.

    Good for you.

When we busted an unopened BBCE case in a group rip, the centering varied from box to box. A few got boxes with almost every card dead centered. I got the box that had cards cut by Stevie Wonder and none of the big 3. Not even a Willie McGee. Plus, almost every pack had one blank back.

Even with the centering that's better than I did on a recent 83 rip. Nice RC pulls!

Are there any commons that are worth submitting from '83 Topps?

I mentioned before that the set registry hasn't really caught on yet for the 83 Topps. I think Salinas is a regular forum user that is doing the 83 Topps set. Might want to send him a PM.
