Another 1986 Fleer Basketball Rip - PART II

As I mentioned in another thread, after having to sell most of my expensive graded unopened packs, I went thru some boxes and came across about 6 unopened fleer '86 basketball packs. I remember buying MANY of these a few years ago and thinking that this batch may have been resealed, so I wasn't going to spend the money to get them graded. Well, today I decided to rip one open and here are the results. I will rip another later this week.

NOT TOO BAD CONSIDERING I DID FIND GLUE RESIDUE ON THE WRAPPER. THE JERK THAT RESEALED WAS PROBABLY ONLY LOOKING FOR THE JORDAN.

Considering that it was a resealed pack (IMO) I am happy with what was in there. Why the hell do you leave a Barkley Rookie in the pack? LOL

Here is a blown up pic of Sir (Gimme anutter beer) Charles! About 35-65 L/R and 45/55 T/B

Doug, Cool watching 86 Fleer rips. Sorry about the cards. That Barkley has a weird cut to it.

Hey Miller ... I don't think the cut is too bad ... the card was not straight on the scanner, nor was it flat on the scanner ... it had a bit of a curl to it. Still, it's an o/c by PSA standards. HOWEVER, not a bad looking card for a raw set.

    The pack is definitely resealed/homemade.
Resealers put off condition hit cards to fool folks into thinking the pack is legit. If you had never opened an 86-87 fleer pack and you bought that one off ebay you would be pretty happy with it. One of the key rookies from the set was in your pack so there is "no way" it wasn't a legit pack. The buyer would then leave positive feedback and some other dupe looking for 86-87 packs would see the positive and begin to believe the packs were legit and bid accordingly. I've bought resealed 86-87 bsk packs and pulled psa 10 commons from them.

I'm very sorry to read the pack was searched and resealed. Thanks for sharing it with us and best of luck if you decide to get any graded.

Robb.. these were not bought off eBay. They were actually bought from someone I had very good dealings with many years ago. They were purchased when I first got into the unopened market, so I did not really know what to look for. I have since bought and sold HUNDREDS of packs (mainly baseball from the 60s and 70s) and probably would have sent these back then if I knew what I know now. I do remember not paying a lot for them (the unopened pack craze was not yet in full swing). I don't think the guy I bought from knew they were resealed either. OH WELL ... LIVE AND LEARN!

  • Speaking of Barkley, have you seen Frank Caliendo's impression of him on youtube, or other video sites?

Just "turrible". Franks brilliant doing him.

But thats a pretty decent Barkley.

There are a few guys on the boards that actually know the sequence of these packs. Im curious to know if the other cards jive with a Barkley RC pack.

    doug,
thank you for sharing. i've been on the wrong end of a reseal as well and sympathize with you. i hope you enjoyed ripping it regardless.

should there have been a bird in this pack?

    Thanks,

Miller ... I was wondering that as well. The only sequence I knew around this time was for the 1988 Topps Baseball. That was when the Al Leiter Error Rookie Card was as hot as any new card around. I would go to all the local stores on my lunch hour and look for one of about 15 cards on the top/bottom of the rack, knowing the THE ERROR would be waiting inside for me. That was a real good use of my time, wasn't it? LOL ALMOST as good as all the money I spent on the 1988 Fleer and Donruss cases, of which I STILL have ~10 cases sitting at home!

Well, since I had another 7 of these SUSPICIOUS packs, I decided to rip another one just now. Results are the same as the first pack ... RESEALED. Note the GLUE on the back flap. Some people are real scumbags!

Good God! Not only did they reseal the packs, they used the crappiest cards possible! Look at those freakin corners! The Bird actually has a BENT corner.

If you're gonna open and reseal packs, at least use minty commons. That's gotta be the lousiest reseal job ever.

Those corners are brutal. It is a shame that there are only a handful of reputable honest sellers out there. I am so nervous buying expensive packs like those because even the most honest sellers can still see the card sequencing through the rapper.

Yeah, it's a shame. I have another 6 or so to rip ... I believe the packs in this group are all resealed. At least I'll have the start to a mid-grade set or cards to trade for other cards in other sets I'm working on.

the nance looks like an 8 with good centering. definitely an unsequenced pack on the 2nd one. looks like an attempt to sequence the first pack, somewhat.

are you planning to rip the others?

    Thanks,

Most likely the other 6 or so packs I have left have been resealed. (I believe they were all purchased at the same time.) That being said I would never resell them, so I might as well open them up.
