Trying something new: stories to go along with my coins

After reading so many of Dave Bowers' books I thought I would give writing a try. So I just kicked off a blog, where I highlight a particular coin in my collection and place it in its historical context. Most of the posts so far have been more personal reflection but I'm starting to get more into the core of my original idea. Here's the link: www.numistories.com. I know I'm not a frequent poster but I lurk here often and would greatly appreciate any input you could give me. Please check it out and feel free to post some comments. I can only get better from your expertise. Thanks!

I will admit I didn't read the whole thing yet, but I was very, very impressed with what I saw. I read a bit of "The Culprit".

Nice photos, nice layout, nice writing. image

QDB, move over- the new generation is coming.

Keep up the good work. I know some people with websites like Carl Wohlforth like to publish articles, and I know people read them, because Carl has some of my stories on his website, and he once got a request from somebody in Florida to reprint one of my coin stories in their newsletter, so he passed the request on to me. He and some other folks with websites that need articles might wish to reprint (or repost some of yours).

I wish I was tech-savvy enough to build my own website as you have done. For now, I just have my "Lord Marcovan's Treasure Territory" forum on 24hourforums.com, which pretty much serves the same purpose as a blog.

  • Thank you! That means a lot to me coming from you. I've enjoyed your metal detecting stories for a long time and I have to say the uncleaned Roman lot I purchased from you a couple of years back fueled my interest in ancients.

  • I agree with your thoughts in 'The Culprit', and will say that circulated coins hold a higher value to me as a history buff. I understand the thought process behind collecting rare, high-end MS coins, but the personality of a circulated coin has it's own appeal.

  • Thanks for the support everyone. Keep checking back because I have a long way to go with the site. My wife designed it and set it all up for me so I had an advantage there. Hopefully my photography skills will improve along the way!

    Mojo,
I really enjoyed your numistories ... Thanks for sharing and I look forward to your next one image
  • excellent idea and writing! trust me, coin retail values will ALWAYS be way off base-- simply because it's the circulated (dare i say, even "junky" coins) that truly have the million dollar history behind them.
  • Once again guys thanks for the support. You're boosting my traffic! Two or three new posts coming this week, an article on a 1917 TY.I SLQ, an ancient follis of Crispus from 321-324 AD, and a review of QDBs "The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins".

By the way, I noticed most of the comments are on my first post. Currently there are five posts on the site. Is everybody seeing all the content or just the first post? Please let me know so I can fix it on my admin page if there is a problem with the link.

Yes, very nice mojo! Interesting topics written in a friendly style. I like that you spotlight ancients and US coins, as I collect both. And I agree with your sentiments in "The Culprit". I will check your site often.

I enjoyed your articles. I got Q. David Bowers' book, Adventures in Rare Coins, years ago as a Christmas gift and was fascinated by his knowledge of both the coins and how those coins were used. Descriptions of nickelodeons, Moxie, and other things 5 cent pieces were used for took me mentally back to another time. The one-two punch of numismatics and popular history knocked me out. Ever since I've been primarily interested in coins as a medium of exchange and not so much as a collector piece to be entombed in plastic.

Keep up the good work, and you may end up attracting people to coin collecting who had no previous interest .

  • Just put up a new post on my follis of Crispus. It's proving to be tough to keep the word count down on these Romans since there is so much to write about.
