FINALLY, after 20 years...
... I have it back. Twenty-one years ago, when I was 13 years old. I had a 1986 Fleer Complete Set. I went to a local card shop with the sole purpose of getting a Michael Jordan rookie. This was before the Beckett price guide came out. Basketball cards were on the verge of catching on, but you could get a Jordan rookie for a little of nothing. I came home that day with the whole set. I had traded about $25 worth of baseball cards for it. I remember a 1985 Topps McGwire being in those cards. That was the best card in the lot. The crazy thing was is that I remember the same shop having about 5 more complete sets that I could've had. Dummy me.
Fast forward a few months. I had said all along that I would never, ever trade or sell this set because it was going to be worth something someday. Well, my uncle, who collected at the time, called me on the phone and said, "Do you still have that Jordan rookie with the set?". I said, "Yes, but I don't want to get rid of it." He said, "I have a huge collection of baseball cards that I will trade you for it." It was about $100 to $200 worth of baseball cards (at the time). Of course, I changed my mind and traded the set to my uncle.
Just a few months after that, the first basketball Beckett came out, and the rest is history. I have been sick about it ever since.
This past week was my 34th birthday. I got some money from different relatives. I sold a couple of things to make up the difference. So, after 20 years, I finally - FINALLY - have it back!!! I AM NOT SELLING OR TRADING THIS ONE!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
I also sold a few sets for the same 25.00

As far as the quality of that card - I do know that it was crease free and had sharp corners. I do not remember how it was centered. I would say that it was at least a PSA 8. It went from an unopened box and straight into the set box. Back then, I took care of my cards, but I didn't pay strict attention like we do now. Plus, I was a kid.

<< <i>He gave me a great deal for it at the time. I don't think he had it very long. I think he ended up selling it and probably making a killing on it. I need to ask him what he ever did with it. >>
What kind of uncle basically steals a set of cards from his nephew like this? I'm half joking/half serious. I have a feeling he knew a bit more about that '86 Fleer set's value than he let on, which is pretty sick.
Anyway, glad you got the set back! Congrats.
<< <i>your 34 years old and you still get money from relatives?.....do you sit at the big table at Thanksgiving?
Congrats!!! >>
HaHa! Good one!
