    The pelican medal appears to reference the time of famine and hardship undergone by all of Europe following the First World War.
    The legend on the reverse roughly translates as Charity, Sacrafice, Help and Nutrition.
    There are some commemorative medals of the period which particularly honor the United States for its mass shipments of grain to Europe.

    I do not know the story behind the second medal. However, it is my understanding that General Drubbel, the garrison commander in Antwerp, was one of the few high ranking Belgian officers who was competant enough to mount some sort of effective defense against the Germans. Nevertheless, there were not enough troops to defend the city and Antwerp fell on October 10, 1914.
