Since I just sold most of my Romans, this means I can't buy any more ancient coins, right?

Now that I'm no longer limited to the Imperial era, I went Republican, on a whim.

I'm not really collecting Romans anymore, per se- I will be buying for eventual resale (which might be dumb, considering my still relatively green status), but I had a VCoins giftcard from my family, so... I put it to good use, I think. What say ye?

Though this coin will be technically for sale not long after it arrives, I bought it because I liked it, and will be in no great rush to sell it. I intend to enjoy it for a little while. I still think and buy this stuff like a collector.

I like the style of a lot of the Republican era pieces- always have. I looked at some Greek silver, too, but in the end I bid on three lots, all Roman. Won one of them... this. Which was actually my favorite of the three I bid on.

  • I haven't heard of C. Vibius CF Pansa.... that's a new one to me. Very nice look to it, I must say that I approve!image

  • Just in from Wildwinds, yours looks better than most of their listings!image

You're a step ahead of me. I didn't look it up on Wildwinds. I just threw caution to the wind, bid, and won. Without it screaming upward at the end of the auction, I was pleased to note. I won it for my initial bid.

  • I've never bid on VCoins auctions. Looks like there may be some deals to be had. Do you win over there often? They have some more nice ones listed, but I hate to wait until the end and find out people snipe those auctions, too.image

I think you did more than ok on that one, you'll have no trouble selling it when (or if) the time comes.

This is my first time going with the auction format on VCoins, actually, though I bought the bulk of my old Roman Imperial collection there from a handful of dealers, at fixed price.

VCoins is definitely the place to go for ancients. It's funny how it's the exact inverse of what you usually see. Usually the selection on a given "mixed" site will be primarily US Coins, with a smaller selection of World Coins, and a tiny selection of Ancient coins. On VCoins, however, it is the opposite: mostly ancients, a fair selection of World, and a tiny selection of US. Refreshing, actually, to somebody who's heart lies largely in the Darkside.

  • I have made many purchases from VCoins vendors, just no auctions yet. Nothing but good words about their site and my experiences.

Super site, loads of ancients. And just look at the deal LordM got, man I'm jealous!image

Having stalled out on my Roman Imperial collection (only the expensive guys remain, and I'm not ready to play the upgrade game... yet), I've moved in the other direction. Yep, Byzantine Empire coins. I have about a dozen attributed coins, nothing fancy yet. Something alluring about having over 1000 years of continuous empire to keep you busy. VCoins seems to be a prime site for this stuff too....

You just reminded me, I picked up a nice Byzantine follis from FilthyBroke (speak of the devil, haha).

That is an area I still am completely in the dark about, and have zero reference on, but they made some cool looking coins.

Wildwinds has very helpful attribution stuff on Byzantine items.

  • speaking of byzantine, i have a byzantine bronze (about nickel size) with an unusual design on the obverse of someone turned to the side and handing something up to another figure. at one time i thought i saw it identified as some kind of 14th century byzantine bronze but now cant find a plate of it anymore---- if anyone knows of where i could find a pic/plate of such a byzantine bronze that would be great! i know my description is kinda vague, and my pic probably wouldnt help much

    Lord Marcovan,

You can send a photograph of your coin to Wildwinds for inclusion in their data base.

A couple of my Roman coins are in there.

Rob, that's a slippery slope you are sliding down.

WB2, I never really thought about that. Having a Wildwinds-published plate coin can't hurt. The Pupienus sestertius from my old set was published, by the previous owners.

Shroomdude- yes, a slippery slope indeed, but I started my long slide down it years ago, really. It's mostly Aethelred's fault, but even before I met him in the early 1990s I liked this kind of stuff.

    Rob,

Nice aquisition. I can tell the ancients are still in your blood.

What do you think of this scuplture of a quadriga?
I came across it on the Sear site.
It's contemporary but it would sure look great on my den wall.

Gil- you're so right- that is fantastic. Looks like the Syracusan dekadrachm design. Just needs a few dolphins twirling around.

I consider that last compliment high praise indeed, considering who it comes from.
