The one from Gemini V that I didn't bid on

That I really wish I had won. Estimate was $1500. Hammer was $2100 and 18% juice = about $2500

Lydian Kingdom. Before Croesus. Electrum trite (4.75 gm). Before Croesus, Ca. 600–560 BC. Head of roaring lion right with radiate protuberance on forehead / Two incuse punch marks. A.R. Bellinger, “Electrum coins from Gordion,” Essays Robinson, pl. 1, 7–24. Weidauer 86–89. SNG von Aulock 2868–2869. SNG Kayhan 1013. Well centered. Extremely fine.

Displayed at Cincinnati Art Museum, 1994–2008, no. 1 (obverse illustrated in guide). Acquired from Harlan J. Berk, March 1990.

The contact mark in the center bothered me a little. But the provenance is so kick, er, outstanding that I really wanted it.

    Thats a beauty.

What was it doing in the Cincinnati Art Museum?

I didn't see the contact mark until you mentioned it- it was camouflaged to my first casual glance, but upon seeing it, yeah, that's a rather rude scratch.

Still, it would take a heck of a lot more than that to kill the appeal of such a historically important and fascinating coin.

This auction consisted of coins from several large collections. One of which was Jacob K. Stein, from whom the Cincinnati Art Museum had exhibited 182 pieces between 1996 - 2008.

Yeah, Lordmarcovan, if you have to have a mark, that's like an extra leaf WI quarter image It blends in pretty well.

and these coins are pretty small--about the size of a large raisin. What looks like a gash is probably virtually invisible at a casual glance.
