Do any full wax boxes or cases exist from the '60's ?

I don't think I've ever seen any full wax boxes much less cases of unopened '60's or earlier baseball cards. If they do exist or have sold at auction, what kind of prices did they fetch? Specifically early '60's. I would love to hit the lottery and rip the hell out of a '61 Topps High Number case.

Corvette, cool thinkin'.............lets keep this going, as Im curious as well
    1964 Topps Football
  • supply and demand if a case of any pre 1970 was found, the prices would fall.. not dramatic, but they would fall.. thank your mother for tossing all your cards when you left home.. if everyone still had their childhood collections, we would not have valuable cards
  • you really think the prices would fall? im not sure how much would actually be broken. The value is in leaving it unopened, once you crack the case, or the box or the pack the value drops considerably unless you get a pristine high number common or Hall of famer.

A full box of 1964 Topps Stand Ups were found and auctioned on eBay a few years ago. You can read the thread about it here. If I'm recalling correctly, there were 120 single-card packs & Steve from BBCE inspected them for the buyer before the cash was handed over.

Edited to say: I think it sold for close to $20K.

no new finds of unopened wax boxes....but check out the major auction houses last year's auctions. You'll find many unopened wax boxes of '60s stuff...'60, '61, 62 recently are the ones that I remember. Not much from the other years. You would have to go back a few years for other years. In the mid '90s Alan Rosen had a find of unopened cases of '60 baseball and football. Rack and wax. That is where I got my unopened '60 rack with Yaz on top.

62 topps cello box in the last mile high auction...think it went for close to $40,000. I don't think supply and demand is an issue for pre 60's stuff. I don't think there's enough of it out there for it to meaningfully affect the supply.

A guy in Peekskill NY named Norman had/s cases going back well into the 60's.

    Stuff is out there.

I own a 1960 leaf wax box from the find from a few years ago. It came from an unopened case that was in the attic of a person who passed away. Its a really cool item...it even has wax paper sheets between the rows of packs....I think the last one sold on ebay a year ago for about 5500.00. Everytime a box or pack is opened, it makes my box more special......Spazzy

I met a dealer on Ebay a couple of years ago that purchased vending boxes of 1967 & 1968 Topps baseball and football. He sold lots on Ebay at the time and guaranteed they would all make higher submission grades. I purchased about 400 cards from the guy after he picked through them to send in to have graded. The cards I got were awesome and at a very below market price. And to top it all off, they were all 3rd, 4th & 5th series numbers. Another thing extraordinary about his vending find was the 67's all had the variation cards. There were a several of the RBAVES variation and so on. I was able to upgrade my set tremendously with the purchase and have hundreds left over of NRMT cards! That is the closest I ever came to anything unopened from that era.

I also wonder just how much unopened 60's stuff is really out there?

And to think this 1952 Topps display was just at one woolworth store (Bronx NY)? My God! image

    rd

P.S. Can you imagine some kid sitting at the woolworth soda fountain, drinking an egg cream in the Bronx, while we are sickened by the thought of this kid sticking a Mantle rookie card in the spokes of his bike, .... just being a cool kid, while his Mantle card makes that clicking sound, pinched to this kid's wheel, by a wooden closepin from mom? Yikes! image

Are some of this boxes still out there too?

Those specific boxes? I dunno? But I can say stuff is out there.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Off the top of my head...

-There was a 60 cello case and rack case find by Mr Mint, maybe 10 years ago? Maybe 96 or 97. There have been other boxes here and there...like 59 Topps cello baseball. 59 Topps cello football.

-There was a big Mastro find/auction about 5, 6 years ago. They auctioned in the spring a full high number box of 52 Topps, a partial 53 Topps box (remember the stir that created?). It was the first time 53 Topps packs had been found in quantity.

-Also, 54 Topps baseball (Canadian). There have been boxes auctioned over the years.

The only cases I can think, years ago...as mentioned 59 Ted Williams Fleer, 60 Leaf, 61/62 Fleer basketball.

And 68 Topps football. Was there a find of those? That's probably the most common 60's football box.

mastro was sold 5 boxes of '54 Canadian Topps a few years ago. Finds do happen.
In regards to what it does to prices, look at the '64 Standup box of penny packs from a year or so ago. Before the find a penny pack sold for just under $900, after the find, and the subsequent dispersal of the individual packs you can find them for about $250.

Wasn't there speculation that Fritsch had a good amount of unopened 60's product, and that the stuff Mastro was selling was just the tip of the iceberg?

Griffins ... I agree 100% about the Stand-Ups. Most of us on the Unopened Packs Thread on eBay did not have one of those. Many of us waited after the box was resold and packed out and we purchased the packs at very reasonable prices. HOWEVER, I think that the 64 Stand up is a LOT more rare than a lot of the regular issues out there.

    PS How have you been?

Will be interesting also to see what happens with the 26 cases of 1975 Topps mini wax boxes that are up for auction this April..

I wish they were breaking down a few...even one case is way out of my price range...image

I came across this page not too long ago. I'm sure some of you have already read this story in the SMR, of maybe even were there, but I found it interesting none the less. It's a story by Joe Orlando about when someone opened a 1952 Topps Pack at the 2007 National. Opening a 1952 Topps Pack

I would be sick at my stomach if I ripped it and it turned out that way. Thats why I dont want to just open one vintage pack. If I'm gonna rip then I want to rip a whole box that way I know I'm gonna get a few big cards.

I remember seeing an ad a few years ago by one of the big unopened dealers. I don't remember who it was but there was a photo of the man in front of a shelving unit full of unopened boxes and it had an unopened CASE of 1958 Topps baseball on the top shelf. I would love to hit the lottery and make him an offer he could not refuse.

Not 100% sure, but my guess would be Larry Fritsch. Still wondering where all the cases are.

'58 is the second toughest pack out there. If a case exists it's being hidden in a deep vault. Nickel packs go for close to 10K- if you can find one.

I hear ebay seller "Pastoney" has about 3 or 4 of those to list in the next week or so...

There used to be someone on these boards who claimed to have a friend who had a 1958 case...that friend of theirs apparently had so much unopened product [most more recent], that the weight was causing issues with the basement floor sinking.

    Anyway...
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
