With the economy at its current state....

I know we are in a recession and that economic times are not as good as we would like, but the next time I get an e-mail or pm from somebody telling me that the economy is bad and that all cards have lost value, I'm going to tell them to stick it where the sun don't shine. I simply assess the value of my card higher than they do. I have had many people tell me "no thanks" or "not interested" or even, "that price is too high for me" I have said the same thing to people of cards that I'd like to buy.

On the Net 54 boards, and man by the name of Bruce Dorskind is trying to get great deals on cards by telling boards members that we are entering a "great depression"

I have no problem with people buying and selling cards with the intention of making money. That is what makes this business go 'round, but the fact is, the things that have hurt and will kill this economy and market is fear, lying and greed.

This is open to criticism and comments.

I read those threads over there from time to time...but I go nuts reading the stupidity on that forum. That's what happens when you pool a bunch of extremely knowledgeable hobbyists into one place...the pompous examples outshine the agreeable ones.

I agree with you though...sure, who doesn't want a deal, but I'm not going to be scared into giving away my prized memorabilia in order to make someone else rich in an economy that has barely touched the broadest segments of the hobby.

I do understand times are tough for many people, but I also realize some are using this as their new tactic to try and get bargain bin prices. If a person is not hurting for money, if might pay for be fairly firm, so the whole market does not go softer than it already is. If people start dumping in a panic, it sure could wind up being a interesting situation, but not in the positive direction.

Not to get off tangent or make this a political thread, but does anyone think the current economic fear/scare is just a continuation by govt/big media of past fears and scares?

It's been a funny coincidence.

First you had 9/11 and Bin Laden. Then Bin Laden videos (remember those popping up every 6-9 months?). Then the colored alerts. We're on orange alert.

Then Padilla, and domestic terrorism. Then Iraq, WMD's, dirty bombs. The public starts to catch onto the truth about that....then wait....and now...

It's the economy! Doom and gloom. We're going to be in soup lines. You have to admit, the timing has been quite suspect. Just as the 2001-2006 fear subsided, 2008 was 24/7 fear by the media. You could be next!

If this is a depression, it's a luxurious one. Went to a high end/upscale mall yesterday, where is the panic and doom and gloom among the public?

I think the current economy will be used be people/parties to try and get deals, and they'll use it to their advantage, no question. Don't give into the fear.

Nope, I personally don't buy your conspiracy.

I see the bad economy with my own eyes, in my own community. Good people who work hard, but they are just struggling to make ends meet. Factories and businesses closing, or cutting jobs/hours. When those folks are not getting full time hours, but it takes that to pay the house/car payments, and the cost of food/clothes, what can they do? It's very real in some areas of the country. More than what some want to believe.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to have a hobby we can spend money on, food to eat, a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and a vehicle/s to drive, we should count our blessings everyday.

I agree with both, I think that in hindsight we'll be able to see the BS politics behind this whole depression/recession. Big business, big oil, the stock market and the tools(politicians) behind their money make tools of the population. Outsourcing, in sourcing(Illegals) and 'MONEY' chasing all avenues of profit don't give a rats ass about you or me. So China becomes the world economic leader, who cares as long as some leader of ours makes a deal that makes him look good in the short run, but screws us in the hundred year.

So Trumps stock is at an all time low, from 28 bucks to 28 cents, whatever. All it means to me as that soon, he'll again cry chapter 11 bankruptcy and wreck the lives of all the people who had faith and were willing to invest in him(slimbag). Trumps billions are safe, his investors however, get your cardboard home ready.

The 'Big Three' need a bail out??? Where the hell have the billions worth of profits from the last 100 years gone? One year of hardship and they need umpteen billion each??? Ya.

WMDs were not found simply because they were not found.

I wish someone would tell the bidders at the various auction houses that we are in a depression. I am tired of being consistently outbid on cards I want! I too, would like to pick up some cards on the cheap, and it just isn't happening like I think it should! :-p

I think its pretty funny a guy would use the economy as his "card" to get a deal. It reminds me of the guys that use either a sick friend/relative/kid to try and get free cards out of you on all deals (usually these people only collect Jordan, A-rod and Jeter) by tugging on heart strings.

Anyone that "ASKS" for freebies or wants to tell you how to sell your cards is someone I don't want to deal with. I have had people throw my own cards at me at shows due to my prices and I sell carp cheap at shows, so there is no number low enough for some people.

you're right .... you just can't go low enough for some people!

my sister had a garage sale last year and had a slew of designer jeans and blouses (for which she paid at least $40+) displayed on a borrowed department store rack.

since it was a garage sale, my sister didn't expect to get much ... so she simply made a sign saying "anything on this rack .. $1".

one lady takes a blouse up to my sister and says that there's a button missing and would she take 50 cents?

my sister told the lady that she'd wash her car with it before she sold it to her for 50 cents.

needless to say, my sister's garage sale days are over; she now donates them to charities.

Some card buyers are the same way!

I have one guy who no matter what the price is on the cards wants to know if I will let him have a "lot" of cards for 10 cents each as he is a dealer too. He will throw in autos, game used and whatever and always offers 10 cents a card.

Not to get too off topic but I saw an interview with Bush where he basically said one of his big regrets about Iraq was that the intelligence on WMDs was so wrong.

That said I don't think the recession is a product of the government/media. Times are tough, I know a lot of people in the housing and banking sectors that are unemployed and under employed. However there are still a ton of people doing just fine. There is just a lot more fear for most everyone. When you know smart, hard working folks that have lost their jobs it makes you more nervous about yours even if you don't necessarily need to be.

It's curious timing. It's a terrible economy relative to the past 20-30 years and our way of living. But a few points...

-It does not rival the great depression (at least so far) in terms of misery, hunger, etc. Went to Costco today for their cheap hotdogs, dinners. We're in a depression, and people are still buying big screen tv's, in huge shopping carts?

-The media fear is way out of proportion to reality. Especially compared to the early 80's recession (when unemployment was higher). Or the 70's. There have been past periods where people questioned capitalism, the system, etc. The media use to inform people.

-The lack of dissent. This recession story has been all one voice.

Every major newspaper and media outlets reports on it in the same way. They've reported on the housing bust as a constant negative. Ignoring that it's great news for renters or first time homebuyers. But you never see that headline..."renters cheer housing drop". Or, "housing gets more affordable".

I definitely agree we're lucky.

My Mom and Dad have three sons....2 are currently unemployed, having lost their jobs within the past 6 months. Fortunately for me (knock on wood) I am blessed with a job that is fairly recession proof.

I would say that these are pretty tough economic times for many and their plight is not exagerrated.

With the economy at its current state....
