A Case Of Good Fortune!

well, this could have been a story of bad luck. but I think it is a blessing.

as you may know. I got diagnosed with MS on August 1st, got my car totaled in an accident on 12/2, my girlfriend got laid off, and is not going back to school.. (at 43.. it is never too late)

well, the latest chapter happened at 3:15 in the morning Christmas day. my girlfriend and I, and her 2 daughters were on the way home from a family party,.. I just got off the freeway, and because eofthe time, I was 1st in line at the red light...

Ana and I were talking, the girls were sleeping in the back seat... I heard the screeching of tires, and looked in my rear view mirror.. I saw a pair of head lights headed straight for us.. I slammed on the gas and went into the intersection..

it was a drunk driver.. if I had not looked, we would have gotten hit hard in the rear... good fortune.. I say yes

    after coming to a stop where i just was a split second ago, he changed to the right lane to make a right turn.. there is no question he was drunk.. he looked like a bobble head.. he cound noteven keep his head up.. he then turned right and overcorrected his turn and almost hit a parked car..

    I've always stated this...late at night, especially on "party nights" such as New Years Eve, treat your green lights as though they were yellow caution lights...IE on busy intersections and even not so busy intersections at these times, even whenn having a green light, still proceed through the intersection with caution, for example I look both ways to make sure some drunk isn't going through their red light. I started driving this way since I began driving and no incident ever happened except for one time, and that's all it takes - I guess it was about 15 years ago I was coming to an intersection and did my usual thing and from the right side I could see a car going full speed through their red light - I quickly looked in back of me and fortunately there were no cars behind me and I came to a full stop at my green light and let the jackass pass through - without a doubt, he was going at least 50 - 60 miles an hour and would have rammed me and despite hitting the passenger side, I doubt that I would have survived an impact like that...at the very least I would have been badly injured...and little doubt that the other driver would have been dead.

    Always and I do mean always "drive defensively" and especially late at night.

    Man, If I was diagnosed with such a condition I wouldn't be driving at 3 am with my kids and wife on Christmas. There are too many crazys out there as you found out.

    Too late now but maybe for next year you should make plans to sleep at the house of the party so you don't have to subject your family to such conditions.

    Glad you and your family is okay though

    true.. the funny thing is that we live about 25 minuted from where the party was.. i usually take the streets home.. but because it was so late, and i wanted to get the family out of the cold, i took the freeway.. it really shook me up how close we came to getting hit.. i was shaking for a good 5 minutes after it happened.

    Isn't it true, though, that as we get older and have families, we try to be more protective of ourselves? I've driven home many times when I was younger at 2, 3 or 4 in the morning, and now I ahsolutely hate being out after 10pm on the roads, especially on a whacky holiday night.
