share pics of your rarest cards

Pick one or more of the rarest cards in your collection. Perhaps a rookie autograph of a deceased hall of famer or an unique signature style that the player no longer uses, or that really expensive 1/1 cut auto you bought last month image

it's really just my excuse to see some really nice pics of your proudest items image

Here are a couple 1/1 of some soso players image.

Ive posted these a few times .............. just seeing if another person has or knows of another example from these sets, ........... havent seen any yet.

This one (above) looks like a 1933 Goudey R309-1 at first glance, but is different in many ways.

    1. The border has a green rim around it making it 1/2" taller and wider than the R309-1's.
    2. The name plaque at bottom is green instead of the gold color of the R309-1's.
    3. The easel is of a different design with a square top instead of the round one found on the R309-1's.
    4. The photo quality is far superior, with a clearer darker image compared to the R309-1.
    5. The top has a hole punched in it for hanging (smaller than a normal hole punch and cleanly cut through the very thick card stock).

The closest thing to the card above was what was called a "1933 Goudey R309-1 Printers Proof" by REA in their 2005 auction (sold for a little over $4K), a thin paper proof with extra wide white border all the way around (below middle). This "proof" came from the files of the Goudey Gum Co.

    imageimageimage

The card is either a test piece, a very early production R309-1, or in my belief actually a 1933 Goudey Sport Kings R340 Premium (obviously never issued as planned). The only R340 ever seen is a single example of a Johnny Weissmuller (an old B&W zerox picture of it from the early 1980s, it has the same style frame but the border color cant be seen). Burdick included the R340 in the ACC only because these premiums were offered on the 1933 Sport Kings wrapper in exchange for 50 wrappers, but he said in an interview in the 1940s he had never seen one.

My other example Im trying to find more info on is this card below

    image
1959 Esslinger's Beer Home Run Derby

The players name was moved from the bottom to the top on this example and an ad for the beer company was put at the bottom.
otherwise its the same size and card stock as the normal/common Home Run Derby cards.

    Any info greatly appreciated.

This card is not a "RARE" card per say but it is super tough in high grade. Of 59 graded only 8 are graded PSA 8 and only 1 is an 8.5- that would be this one right here, I sent it in for a bump and it got it! There is only 1 8.5 on the planet and I own it! image

  • First off, I'm no Tyson fan at all, but I do dig this card, primarily because it was acquired via a through-the-mail request. On a TTM difficulty scale of 1 to 10, I'd put Tyson at 9, with 10 being Barry Bonds and dead people.

What's more impressive is the fact that he didn't even bite a corner off of it lol
  • Just got this back, highest graded. Only 3 graded and I have them all.

This is probably the rarest card from my Jabbar/Alcindor collection. I have a couple other 70's issues that are close but this one is my favorite.

That's a sweet card. What do they run $ wise?? I'm considering camping out to meet Kareem in about 6 weeks in order to get a Topps signed rookie, but that would be cool to get signed as well.

That is one of the funniest statements I have read on here in a while. I just had Red Bull come out my nose.
  • This is one of the rarer cards of my collection. Mr Anfernee (Penny) Hardaway, who no longer signs his name as "Anfernee", signed this card during his college days -

  • Is Penny Hardaway still around?

    Nice Nap up there Goose!

  • Ladder - Mr Hardaway is comfortably retired in Florida. His once promising, awe-inspiring career was derailed by knee injures. He was my favorite player from the early 90's when he was the modern day version of Magic Johnson image

Perhaps not the toughest card I have, but probably the toughest set I'm working on.

Let's just say that I paid more than I would like to.

But a rookie auto of the late great Dennis Johnson is such a rarity that I cannot pass it on.
