Uh, .250? According to ESPN.COM the guy is a .290 lifetime hitter.

Edit: 162 game average of 36 HR and 121 RBI.
  • I'm a Rangers fan and as a group, we have an emotional attachment to Tex. I sure hate to see him go to the Empire.

Interesting development - what will happen with Matsui? Yanks were saying that they wouldn't go after Tex unless they could move Matsui.

I am not a fan of the Yankees...not even close...but

Tex is a HECK of a player. One of the best in the game I would wager to say. I might even go as far to say he i the best 1st baseman in the AL.

Are you sure they didnt mean going after Manny unless moving Matsui? Id rather have Matsui. But Yanks were desperate for a good fielding 1st basemen as well as a power hitter to protect ARod.

Yes, all of you whiners can cry cry cry about the Yanks spending big bucks, buying a championship, blah blah blah....its only been PROVEN that its matters NONE how much money is spent. They all have to play as a TEAM and win. Yanks didnt do it well enough last year even with that payroll. The salary is a WEAK arguement only for whiners. How about some REAL discussion about them playing ball well enough to win??

If the pitching pans out with CC and AJ and Wang can stay healthy then, the team should have the offense to make it a VERY interesting season.

Yankees again do not lose out on a big name free agent.
I"m not sure that I would like my favorite teams to be able to have every player they want. Even if they win, they were supposed to. What's the point? Where is the strategy? Where is having to sacrifice one player for another? One strength for one weakness? I don't get it.

I think the Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks proved that you can in some situations. Both of those teams overspent, won a WS title and then had to dismantle their teams soon afterwards

How can you throw out the discussion of money, when that is a very real fact? The Steinbrenners think they can just lure in the best of the best with the biggest bucks and buy themselves a championship. Where is the skill in that? That's not sport, that's suck. It's easy to just become a fan of the team who spends the most money. There's no heart or pride in that, just bragging rights. Rights that are not earned on the baseball field, but in the clubhouse among owners and agents. That's not baseball.

I love the old Yankees, because I'm a baseball fan. The new Yankees suck, and they're a disgrace to the sport and the franchise.

You can throw it out cuz its not a factor. Past 7 years have proven it. Yankees do not have the wealthiest ownership either. I think its the Twins owner who is. Just that the Stienbrenner family cares about winning and are willing to spend the money to give them the best chance. Be mad at the owners who line their pocket and not do their best to put a quality team on the field.

My first thought as I read this post was that it was that the writer was exceptionaly ignorant. I started thinking about it and decided that I might have been influenced by the writer's unfamiliarity with the rules of grammar. I decided to research the facts.

Did Tex looked washed up two years ago? Apparently not-he hit 306-30-105 with an OBP of 400. His OPS+ was 150.

Does Tex have a usual line of 250-25-90? No-his average per 162 games is 290-36-121. His career OPB is 378, and his career OPS+ is 134.

The problem with making inane statements is that it is so easy to check them these days.

True, all of their players are/were statistically some of the best on the teams they came from, but can they play together on the same team? Baseball seems to be a game of chemistry. You can have all the talent in the world, but sometimes they just can't play well together. We'll see I guess.

I can't wait for them to miss the playoffs this year. I don't like Teixeira or Boras. Boras is bad for the game, I suppose if he was my agent I would love him too. Teixera was going to be drafted by the Phillies, and Boras told them he would not sign with them because Rolen was the third baseman and future in Philly. Of course, he plays first base now. The system is all messed up.

This team is obviously not last years team. Yes they may be the next 2008 Tigers, but i doubt it.

Of course they will be harder to beat. They gained 3 front line players, and lost one (Mussina). Cano and Melky will probably be better. They got almost nothing out of Posada last year.

Yeah, those A's from 72-74 had no chemistry. They hated each other all the way to three WS titles. I'll take the talent and give you the chemistry.

Think of what kind of farm system all that money could buy. Guess Steinbrenner just doesn't see it that way, he probably views the rest of MLB as his "farm system".

Some of you guys simply amaze me, they call these players free agents for a reason.

They are FREE to sign with whatever team they choose.

Detroit had the best team on paper last year too.

If this doesn't show how badly a salary cap is needed in MLB, I'm not sure what does.
  • goose3goose3 Posts: 11,471 ✭✭✭
How is it that they can afford all of the players but the taxpayers are paying for a chunk of that new stadium?

Did I misinterpret something I read at one point?

do you realize that the Yanks payroll is still LESS??? How does this prove a need for a salary cap? Though I dont think it would be a bad thing, just wondering your reasoning.
  • Won't do them any good. The Phils are going to repeat. A new home grown dynasty.

Less than all the money on earth, by a small amount.

There's no need for a salary cap. Get rid of guaranteed contracts and the problem is solved. Pay 'em whatever you want, they'll have to produce if they want to keep earning it.

Or you could just leave the owners and the players union to bargain the best deal for everyone and then root for your team and try not reach unreasonable emotional conclusions when the big money franchises behave the way they always have.

And for everyone who genuinely feels like the yanks are the evil empire, try your hardest not to act like the Red Sox fans have recently - conveniently not noticing that their own team has spent absurd amounts of money in the free agent market. If your team ever decides to mix it up with big boys by expanding the payroll, be sure to come back here and talk about how your beloved franchise is ruining the game.

That is, unless you are just feeling whiny and you don't actually have the courage of your convictions.

The Yankees payroll will be less than it was last year.

I like the NBA "salary cap"

You can resign your players at current market value. That way, home grown talent can stay and be paid, but free agent talent cannot be. Its about the only thing the NBA has that is good anymore.

Not a New Yorker. Not a big Yankees fan either.

But I will call out the hypocrites and the whiners. Particularly when they put together super flimsy arguments for hating franchises, fans, rules, collective bargaining agreements, etc.

    Nice try, though.
