A new record price for a 70's set that is 80% raw?

Holy cow and the auction hasn't even closed. 1971 topps BB is tough, but 40 Grand worth of toughness??

Mastro 1971 set

Whats the deal with the flip on the Nolan Ryan. I've never seen one with a font like that. And check out how long the bar code is. Is this a very early version or what?

Its a very early cert. from what I've seen of psa cards from this time period, Probably a 8 by today's standards

I wouldn't say that the hobby is recession proof, but there are deep-pocketed collectors who are, and if they need it, they'll fight for it.

I am sure the winning bidder is not really worried about that.

Must be nice when money is no object.
  • I would guess that the "playset" CEO/Founder out of Minnesota is one of the players driving the bidding.

Just the PSA9s would likely get the 40K back in your wallet. Then you have to deal with the Banks PSA 10, and the BVG 9s of Munson/Rose.

I'm sure you can cover the $8K in buyers fees with those. Not a steal at $48K, but I don't think the buyer would lose money if they were to piece it out over a year or two.

I'll just stick with a raw NRMT set with PSA 7 keys thank you. Even if I did have $40K, I'd rather use that to work on 1960s sets (EXMT, PSA 6 keys). image

  • Great looking group of graded cards, but by my math, there are only 96 total graded cards from 3 different grading companies. Comes out to a little less than 13% of the set being graded. That's a ton of coin for 96 cards, over $416 per graded card before auction close (Currently at 40K.), and that's without the juice. Granted, the PSA 10 Banks, and slew of HOF'ers in 9 are pushing the bidding. Any guess as to the current price of a completely graded set in 8? Would it get this kind of attention?

PSA 10 commons on this set look like they have been selling between $1500 to $2000 on average in 2008. A Bobby Grich 10 sold for $4550 and a Mets Rookies 10 card sold for $4494 so I can only imagine what the Banks would get. And the last two Nolan Ryan PSA 9s sold for $3050 and $6845.
  • Love the high quality 70's material!

  • Already priced too high. I would think the high bidder is just hoping that someone outbids him at this point.

I'm pretty proud of my 100% raw '71 set, but those cards make mine look like dog meat. Some real stunners there. I would, however, love to see scans of some of the set's raw cards.

I think I can honestly saw that I'm jealous of both the buyer and the seller!

What are the odds that the Munson would cross over to a PSA 9?
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
None, about 99% odds are its sheet cut, thus its holder.

Possibly the 2 worst scans that I've ever seen. I understand that most of the potential buyers for lofty cards like these are buying the numerical grade and probably don't care whats in the slab, but those scans are ridiculous.
