What do y'all think this signed Jackie Robinson rookie will sell for in this economy?

What do y'all think this signed Jackie Robinson rookie will sell for? I'm currently the high bidder at $1400.00 plus buyers premium, but just wondering what the consensus is for "market value" of this card in this economy.

I would know Mike, but I would think that is a must have card for any serious collector.

    Hey Mike,

This would add nicely into your collection! Is this on ebay or in auction house?

You'll be paying a lot more for it now that you've advertised it here.

Maybe not, Mike's project is one that we all enjoy. I for one want to see him complete it. How can you not root such a lofty endeavour on?

I'm certainly not (I've been collecting the same cards for years now). I'm just saying that showing items you are interested in before they end is a sure fire way to end up having to pay more for them.

  • Hi Mike,

Good luck! Hope you get it!

One of my closest friends paid $3100+ for the same card with a PSA 8 Sig Grade about a year and a half ago!

To get this beauty between $2000 to $3000 would be a steal, even for today's market.

    Sean,

Most of the time I think that you are spot on with your observations, but I do disagree with this one. I don't think many people will see it here that wouldn't have seen it anyway. I'd venture that most people that would be willing to spend what it's going to take to get this card, already receive the catalog that its in. If it was in an obscure ebay auction with poor keywords, I would agree with you and wouldn't "out it" if I wanted it, but with it being in a national catalog auction that probably has a large majority of the most well heeled collectors as catalog recipients, then I'll disagree on this one.

It is quite a striking card and I certainly hope it goes at a level that my pocketbook can afford. Would make a tremendous end of the year addition to my set.

    PoppaJ,

If you don't mind me asking, what venue did your friend buy his at? Private sale? Auction house?

    Take care,

    Mike

    Fandango,

Good luck if you decide to bid. I haven't decided yet how hard I'm going to go after it. It's outside of the scope of my planned acquisitions (I wasn't supposed to go back past 1952 but I seem to be slipping image ) but if the mood hits I might chase it hard. There are so many nice things in that auction that I'm going to have to pick one or two priorities to go after.

  • I don't think today's economy has any affect on a card like that.

Mike, are there any other cards in your HOF rookie collection that are more than just the player's signature like this Robinson card (ie. Best Wishes)?
  • RipublicaninMassRipublicaninMass Posts: 10,051 ✭✭✭
Mike, I am hunting a 55 topps auto'd Robinson. I've been out bid at just over 2k recently. The only caveat could be that it looks really nice for an 'auto only' grade ya think it might be altered? I know it may not be important to you, but it could make the final price easier on the wallet. I have only seen 3-4 auto'd 55 topps, I would expect probably the same with the 48 leaf or even less.

  • IMHO this is one of those items that the economy will make little impact. When it comes to high end items like this the people with the money to spend will be there until the end. Hopefully for your sake I am wrong, though.

    Mike,

He won it from one of the auction houses; I'm almost positive that it was through Heritage.

  • Wow, awsome card!
  • That is sweet! Even the card without the autograph looks great, with a PSA 7 worth about $2000 this has got to go for $3500+! Wish I had that kind of money. Hope you get it. -Jason

There are a couple, but they are mainly player's nicknames that I asked them to add, or their HOF year. I think I only have one personalized. I am trying to get Yogi Berra to sign one of his 48 Bowman's as "It ain't over till it's over. Yogi Berra", but I can't get his sons to call back yet.

Now it's up to $4,000 plus $800 buyers premium. And to think I had wishful delusions that I'd get it for $2500

  • I was going to put a bid in on the 33 Goudey Dean, But at 1600 + it went for about a $1000 more than I was going to bid.

I got shutout tonight. Was also going for the 56 Topps PSADNA William harridge and Warren Giles but ended up being the underbidder.. I bid 750 and they sold for 800. I wasn't willing to go over a grand with BP for them.

    Did you get anything

I won the 48 Leaf Ted Williams. I was an underbidder on the 1951 Bowman autographed set, and if it weren't the holidays, I'd have gone and bid again, but just couldn't do it. I was also considering rebidding on the 33 Foxx, but had to bail. If you need a 56 Warren Giles, let me know, as I have an extra one.

    Hi Mike,

Just wanted to let you know that my friend did win his from Heritage, but the price he paid was a bit higher than the $3100+ that I quoted earlier in this thread.

He actually forked over $4100. So, don't feel bad about this PSA/DNA 9er getting away from you.

It could reach $5500-$6000 at the rate it's going.

    It is a beauty!!!

Hope you find another one someday that's a bit more down to earth, pricewise image

final is 4800 , great card. don't think the economy affects things like this as there is always demand for the truly unique items.

I missed out on this one being the underbidder for 3900 . still pi$$ed I didn't go higher a month later

    image
  • just a question on the original PSA/DNA card posted - is the card guaranteed real? The flip is for the auto only, right? It doesn't even say the card is authentic, does it?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
    Craig

The card itself is graded Mint 9, the auto is authentic.

Or at least I think that is how it works with the blue cert.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • to me "auto grade only" infers that only the auto is graded, but that's just my opinion...
  • MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
Blue flips only grade the auto. If it were in a red flip then the card would be graded (if paid for) and auto authenticated.

Ahhh I stand corrected I had the colors backwards.

So in this case the auto is graded a 9.

    I see.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • interesting...so the card could be a reprint....
  • could be but still an amazing card!!!
  • RipublicaninMassRipublicaninMass Posts: 10,051 ✭✭✭
doubt it"s a RP, but strange since it could grade so high
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Yup it could be but I doubt that. I'm wondering why the owner did not get the card graded?

    Trimmed maybe?

Seems alot of trimmed cards have been making the rounds as of late.

maybe that is why the owner chose to only have the auto graded.

    Steve

    Good for you.
