Could someone explain vending

When it comes to cards, is there any difference between the cards from vending boxes and packs you get at a store? If not, why would an ebay seller feel the need to declare something is from vending?

It's usually what alot of guys do here when they get their grades back
  • I have no idea why sellers say from vending. I assume most collectors, like myself, think of vending as cards with dinged corners.

Cards from 'vending' will not have wax stains.

At one time they were used by dealers to make sets.

many times, like mentioned above cards from vending boxes will have corner dings.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I think the main difference is that vending cards should have no gum or wax stains that you might find on cards from packs. For me it mostly makes a difference when purchasing a large set or lot from somebody you don't know - if you believe that it really did come from vending boxes then there should be any wax surprises. I also think it it tends to be an overused claim and that only about half of the cards purported to originate from vending actually did (for ebay listings that is)

Cards that came out of vending boxes don't have wax stains on them because they were never inserted into packs, so they have that going for them.

I usually hate trying to find the differences between the "hobby" versus "retail" versions in the modern player collections that I am dealing with. There are differences--sometimes easy-to-tell, other times the difference is so slight, I am still not sure which version I bought online.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

As has been previously mentioned, cards from vending boxes were never packed with gum. Topps "Vending Boxes" were simply the 24 500-count boxes of cards that made up a 12,000 card case (at least until the mid-late 1980's), that Topps sold directly to card dealers/wholesalers/collectors.

Theoretically, cards from vending boxes should be in better shape since they were never put on the shelf in packs for kids or retailers to mangle, nor will they have any chance of being wax-stained.

in the old days, they came out of card machines, kinda like gumball machines so i guess the vending name just stuck somehow?
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Rube is correct, at first they were sold to company's that would use them in vending machines.

Later, when that way of selling them died out Topps would take the educational angle with them thus
that is what you see written on the vending box.

As mentioned above dealers could order them to build sets with.

I also think at one time they could buy a vending box of one player.

    Good for you.

I never knew there was some hobby/retial differences until I recently saw a post about it. The difference was in the foil. Crazy.

If you were a dealer with a storefront and an account with them and if they were doing that in 1983 yes.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • At the National in Atlanta in 1997, I remember going through a stack of about 30 1969 Topps Bob Gibsons that the dealer said came from one vending box. I remember having a very hard time deciding which one to choose because they were all clones with the exact same centering, slight tilt, nearly mint corners, etc. I finally ended up landing on what I thought was the best and bought it. Years later, I sent it the Gibson to PSA only to have it rejected as miscut. image
