Just purchased a NearMint '65 Set

I pulled the trigger last night on a NearMint + 1965 Topps set. The seller recently sold a '72 set in NearMint condition for $1302 and a '64 set in Ex-NM condition for $2251 and both buyers were extremely happy so I bought this great looking '65 set. The other two set listings were the same as the '65 in that he didn't have many pictures but the condition was outstanding. The stated condition of the set I bought is even better than the other 2 so I think I made a good buy. I plan on getting the major cards and some of the possible mint commons graded.

maybe he's rich and doesn't need the money.

$1300 for nice '72 set is obscene.
i hope he's rich & has a '75 mini set for me, so i can scoop up his cardboard benevolence.

Good luck with it Corvette.

Steve, you must not have looked at the auction - it's a nice set of raw cards - mostly 6 perhaps low end 7 type cards, and the centering frankly isn't good on most of the key cards, But i'm not knocking the set at all - still a very nice buy, but the price paid is likely right about what it's worth, perhaps a slight bargain, but the seller in no way shape or form left 15K or anywhere even remotely close to that on the table.
Stevek I said that in reference to the OP saying it could be a 7.5 to 8.00 set.
" but to have a couple hundred less than 3 thousand in a NearMint+ '65 set with all the stars and mint cards graded is going to be sweet especially if they average in the 7.5-8 range."
When I was collecting that set, a set that averaged out at 7.50-8.00 was values at around 18k hence my remark.
Yes I did look at the auction..
I also agree with Nick, if the buyer is happy then so am I.

Okay now I see what you were saying. Yes, then you are correct. Sorry to say to the buyer but I would highly doubt that any of the key cards would grade an 8 and probably not a 7either - Gonna likely be a lot of uncentered backs, uncentered fronts, wrinkles, dings, etc., on those cards, and again...it's still a nice set - The '65 Topps is one of my favorite sets.
I could go into more detail but the bottom line is here's hoping I'm wrong and in any event enjoy the set.
Brian (iamthegreatcornholio) from the board here sold a '65 set just like that about a year ago for i believe was around 14K. But his cards were considerably nicer than the ones in that auction, well centered and PSA graded - i think his Maris was an 8 and the Mantle was a 7.
I had around 70 9's in my set. Brian had considerably less. Brian and I traded and did our sets at around the same time.
His set was transferred to the buyer, while mine was retired.

One of the things that drives the card collecting industry is speculation, right? I am speculating that the condition of the cards warrants me paying $2200 and then another $600 for grading. If I happen to lose a little then it won't be the first time I've lost on an investment. Not to mention that the seller offers a 7 day refund if I'm not satisfied. The last set I bought was the '61 set in which I paid $2000 and then upgraded and graded and completed the set. Eventually I had about $3100 in the set after selling the lesser cards that I upgraded. I got $4500 for it when most on here said it was a down market, etc...

Why are you so damn negative about everything? Is it not ok for other people to make nice buys and possibly get a good deal?
I've been back into collecting and buying and selling cards for few months now and I have yet to lose money on a deal. Im sure it will happen but it hasn't yet. Even if it does and I lose a lot then I'm having fun. I also don't really need the $2200, if I did then I obviously wouldn't have spent it on cardboard. Also, in case you missed it I HAVE 7 DAYS TO RETURN THE SET IF IM NOT SATISFIED. Obviously if the cards are all EX then Im gonna send it back. But, if they are all 7's and 8's then I'm gonna make a very nice chunk.
Thanks to those of you that have had good things to say. For the most part this board is enjoyable.
<< <i>I think you'll get some enjoyment in the anticipation and even more by looking through all those nice cards, If you keep them to look at, super. If you have to send them back, no biggie, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If you can turn a few bucks, all the better. I'm an optimist and like the purchase. Best of luck, can't wait to see some scans. >>
thanks fatty, my sentiments exactly.
<< <i>With the stars, that tended to be handled a little more than the commons, being in such nice shape I would tend to believe that there are some screaming nice commons in there. If a couple grade 10 and a couple more low pops pull a 9, then he can make his $$ back in a dozen or so cards. Those can be sold seperately, replaced with 7s or 8s from ebay for pennies, and then flipped as a set again. A very low risk of loss here, and quite a bit of room to move in a positive $$ direction. >>
I agree.

Tommy I have some advice for you, when you say things here it gets recorded, and saved, your stories have changed
so often. Do you even remember what you say?
Steve
<< <i>Who's being negative? I'm being practical, you have a snowballs chance in hell making any 10's from that set.

lmao,
yes, do you remember what you say? I don't remember the exact things that you say but I know that 95% of it is negative and I even tried to get along with you even though you kept badmouthing my '61 set purchase and now you are doing the same with my recent Mantle purchase and this set. You seem like a tired old miserable human that gets enjoyment out of being negative towards others.
You may be a nice guy, but from your item description I will not be buying it because I know I have a snowballs chance in hell of you actually being a pleasant person. Much like me having a snowballs chance in hell of making any 10's from that set.
I just don't appreciate people coming here, then on the pretense of asking for advice lie their arse off and spam an auction.
Which you did when you tried to sell the 61 set!
You know the 61 set the one where you came here looking for advice so you could peddle it for 10k? Then 9k the 8k etc?
I suggest you go back and re read the PM's you wrote to me! Then, it was if it sold 5k you would be losing on the set, now it is you bought
it for 2k and made a bundle. I really don't care! Just don't say that I must be miserable because I call you out on your lies!
I may be, but one thing is certain you are FOS.

lol, so I'm not suppose to ask 10K for it first and then come down? No wonder you lose money on your stuff. I own a car dealership and I guess I should just start off at what I'll take for the car and have no leeway. lmao.
.
Car dealership? That explains everything.

I've got a nice '07 Mercedes I'll sell to You for $54,000. For anyone else it would be higher.

If pricing my set high at first makes me FOS then everyone that sells anything is FOS. At least Im not negative about everyone elses deals on here.

please reply once more, have the last word, and enjoy your set when it comes
for 20 minutes then change your mind and list it over at the BST for 5k
telling anyone that will listen how you been building it for 20 years, bought a few
other sets, created one great set out of it all and if it sells for 5k you will be breaking even on it
Or whatever crap that spews out of that mouth at that time.
Me? I'm not buying any of it.
With that I'm done here, have the last word it's on me.

listen egg, I don't need to justify anything to you. You blurt out negative crap in every thread about everybodys dealings on here.
I had a bunch of '61's from when I was a kid collecting and then I stopped until a few months ago and bought an almost complete set of '61's. I then bought several lots of '61's and replaced some of the cards. If you don't believe me then look at my buys on ebay.
Either way, I don't give a rats *** what you think about any of my buys or sells. Everyone else on here has been great to talk to and deal with while I'm getting back into collecting. I've gotten 7 pm's now from people that said to just ignore your drivel like everyone else does. It seems you are the joke of the message board.
Have a good Christmas. I've got a nice 1965 set I'll sell you for $5000 if you need a last minute gift.
