  • It sure would be nice if Ebay automatically debited someone's Paypal account as soon as the auction ended, either with BIN or standard auction. Since paypal is supposedly required anyway, why not just debit their account automatically?

I agree and it will happen soon enough. Such things are in talks right now.

I can see it happening soon, too. However, one of the potential downsides of this policy would be for those sellers that offer a shipping discount for purchases within a 7-day period.

    2009.

    .........

However, EBAY has decided that there are too many sellers.
MANY, will not be part of the site's future.

The good news is that the bifurcation - new stuff and collectibles
in different areas - is also on the 2009 menu.

  • I've left ebay all together as a seller - I rarely buy on it as well.

    I've opened up a store at ecrater.com

There are other places I choose to shop, trade ... and chat.
  • So basically a person could only bid to a maximum of what they have in there Paypal account or whatever their credit card limit.

    Speakin of oddball eBay/PayPal issues...

I bid on an item and win it for $2.99. The shipping price isn't listed, but the auction says to use the shipping calculator to figure it out. Upon doing so, I see parcel post will be around $9.00; however, the seller's invoice has a shipment cost of over $23.00. Certainly not what I was expecting, and I wouldn't have bid had I known, but whatever. The thing is...PayPal won't allow me to send a payment. I can go through the steps, but when I attempt to confirm payment I receive a message stating the payment was not made and to contact customer service. I'm able to pay for other items though. Is this because of excessive shipping? Is PayPal attempting to moderate the issue before it's an issue?

    "I've opened up a store at ecrater.com "

    //////////////////////////

    It is the smart play.

ecrater should do very well in 2009 and beyond.

After the holidays, a new batch of sellers will land there.

There is already good traffic, BUT it requires a good bit of
marketing-work that most EBAYers are not used to.

What was the item? It could be that the item is from a category that has a set shipping amount.

I've had a lot of people take 2+ weeks to pay. It's getting annoying.
  • BunchOBullBunchOBull Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭
It's a lithograph printed on a home plate. Weighs 7.5 lbs, 17.5"x17.5"x1.5"...so there is going to be cost associated with the shipping. But because it's a lithograph, maybe there is a fixed shipping price.

  • my sales the last 10 days have been slow (not sportscards, but medical supplies, bandages and dressings) fortunately ive been slowly redirecting folks to doing direct sales and invoicing so 1/3 of my repeat customers avoid Ebay entirely. (and all the bloated fees/final value rapings etc.)

Same here...I just send a nice note after 7 days stating that if they no longer wish to purchase the item to please let me know so I can relist and end the transaction mutually. Totally unthreatening, but a friendly reminder...not one person has asked me to relist.

  • I bought and paid for an Item on the 14th. It didn't ship until yesterday.

    Unacceptable.
  • I had 10 auctions end on Sunday... 5 have paid and one has asked if they could send a money order. I guess I should be happy with 50% of the people paying within a day or so.

46 auctions ended between sunday and monday nite, 10 waiting for payment as of this morning. I also have a car listed for a friend, the high bidder is in florida (I'm in PA) and he has bids on 25+ other cars right now.

I got a message yesterday that if I ship for less than the stated amount that he will be appreciative in his feedback.

Luckily I have yet to experience any problems with ebay/paypal.

A few weeks ago I listed 30 cards, 25 sold and all were paid for within 72 hrs.

1500.00 in sales for little or no effort.

    Good for you.
  • How about forum users winning one of your eBay auctions. Then sending a PM on here offering to also purchase an item that did not sell on eBay. Then not paying for either one of them after promising to pay for 3 weeks. Sorry to interrupt the thread, but needed to vent just a little.

I've had pretty good luck since going to mostly fixed price. It seems the fixed price buyers pay right away, but the auction winners take a while.

I guy recently won a $500 card from and wants to pay by check. I told him OK, but I hate having to wait until it clears to ship.

Checks and Money orders are your friends.

I love when my buyers state they are sending a MO or check.

I like saving the Paypal fees as well. However I am more nervous taking a check for a $500 card than for a $50 card. I've never been burned, but I would rather have the first time on a $20 card than a $500 one.

What would be the difference since the bank fees on a returned check would be the same regardless of the check amount. The only issue would be relisting the card. You'd get your listing fees back by filing with eBay.

Depending upon the feedback of the buyer and/or the value of the item, I tend to ship items paid by check the same day I receive payment.

I asked because your post was directly below mine.

I did not want others to think it was me you were speaking too.

The difference would be 450.00 in the case above, just because a check clears and the dough is available does not
mean the money can't be taken back from you. That is what the poster above meant. Or at least I think that is what he meant.

It's simple really - BEFORE depositing the check, say it's for $500, just call the buyer's bank, tell them you have a check for say $750 to be safe, and ask them if it's okay to deposit the check - they will always tell you if the funds are available to cover the check...one time a NY bank charged me I think it was $2 for the information but every other time the bank gave it to me for free right away over the phone - don't forget the info benefits their customer who wrote the check to receive their merchandise as promptly as possible keeping their customers happy - I've never had a problem with a check when doing this...and don't tell the buyer you're gonna do this - there's no need to.
