  At some point I am going to have to lay out some money for at 66 Mantle and I will buy it graded and crack it PSA 5 or less.

  I crack out a few cards a week, mostly on sets I am working toward. Generally 7s & 8s.

  My Boys and I are working on raw 1974-1982 Topps Baseball sets, but haven't purchased any graded cards we need (yet)... we have received a 7 & 8 in trade and broke them out. We may need to purchase some cards that we cannot obtain in trade and we are trying to stay at EX-MT or better, but if the price is right we will break out any grade (9's included).

  For the set I'm working on, I wouldn't crack out anything better than a 2.
  
  I'm building a graded and ungraded set for that year, both sets will be low grade.

  I do it on some '60's sets like '64 Standups. 5's and 6's are my max for crack outs.

  I break out 4's, 5's & 6's all the time for my raw 50's and 60's sets.

  Collecting all cards - Gus Zernial
  Post Cereal both raw and PSA Graded (1961-1963)

  I do mostly modern stuff and will crack 9's and even the odd 10.

  I have done this for all Topps baseball sets from 1970-1981, except for 1971. That's because I can't afford any 1971's in PSA 9!

  I collect 1950's and 1960's. I crack many 6's and 7's to add to my raw sets.
