PSA Grading Question Regarding "Authentic"

I submitted a T206 Walter Johnson (portrait) to PSA in October. The card has a very nice front but back damage from where it had at one time been glued onto cardboard.
Rather than have such an old and popular card with such a nice front come back as a 1 Poor because of the back damage, I requested on the submission form that the card be graded "Authentic." I did so by typing "Grade as "Authentic"" in the Variety column on the line for that card on the submission form. Whether I was right or wrong, it was my thinking that the card would have greater value with an Authentic grade rather than the 1 Poor grade that I anticipated it would get.
The card came back to me today with a 1 Poor grade.
Here are my questions:
1) Why was my "Authentic" request ignored? Did PSA mistakenly miss my request or did they purposely ignore it because of a policy of which I was not aware?
Before I bother PSA with this question, I thought I'd run it through the Message Boards first. So, any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your reply.

The grading companies do make mistakes. It is a pain to get them fixed though.

Not sure what your line of thinking is on this but say if you auction this card on ebay, and show a clear scan of the front and back the way an auction should be presented, then when the grade is 1, at least a potential buyer is gonna know it's because of the damage on the back...however if the grade is just "authentic", a potential buyer is gonna see the damage on the back, and then believe it was also trimmed, doctored, recolored, etc. You can also state in the auction that there are no pinholes, etc.,...that the 1 was strictly the result of the glue, etc.
I'd be happy with the way it was done at PSA despite the fact they didn't do it the way you wanted...and I'm not sure why they didn't.
If I saw a PSA-1 (T206 card) I would know it is in low grade but at least you would know exactly what you are getting.
With a (machine cut) card in an "A" grade..... the first thing I think is the card has been tampered with in some way (trimmed, recolored, rebuilt, glued, etc.) or the card fell below the standard for a "1" grade, both are less desirable than an honest PSA-1 card.
<< <i>IMO, Id rather have a card with a PSA-1 than a PSA-A (not counting handcut cards). >>
I agree!
