stupid question?

Hi I'm new on the boards and I have never sent a sub in to PSA and I was wondering if you had to join to submit stuff or is there another way? If you do have to join are there any other reputable companies where you don't? Thanks in advance for any info you might be able to help me with!

  • You have to join PSA to submit.

BGS (Beckett) and SGC are two companies you do not have join to submit and both have good followings. Who you are going to submit to, for the best turnover (if grading to sell) depends on what you are submitting.

  • Good Evening,
No, you do not have to join, you only need to send me $124.00 and I will take care of all your cards. Just PM me and I will give you an address to send them too!!!

    Thanks

Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
  • Come on Neil, cut him some slack.

If you are only wanting to sub a few cards, PSA does have gift certificates that can be used for grading. Another option would be similar to what Neil said. Find someone on here that is about to send in a sub and ask if you can piggyback.
  • Bill,
No slack until you get rid of the Grandma Alien picture. I am upset everytime I have to watch it. Sometihng about it just gives me the HeebeeJeebee's.

    Welcome to the Boards image

Here's a link to some frequently asked questions about PSA that may be of some interest to you.

You might want to post a few pics of your raw cards to this thread, before you sub them, to get a few unbiased opinions of the grades that they may receive.

    Just a thought!

  • Thanks for all the info! I would love to join but I simply don't have enough to make it worth my money. May have to use BGS or find someone to piggyback do you recommend starting a thread to find someone or do I need to be more established before anyone will take me?

    Thanks again!

“First you must find... another shrubbery! (dramatic chord) Then, when you have found the shrubbery, you must place it here, beside this shrubbery, only slightly higher so you get a two layer effect with a little path running down the middle. ("A path! A path!") Then, you must cut down the mightiest tree in the forrest... with... a herring!”

Joining at the lowest level is a good way to go. You get vouchers for a couple of free gradings which just about make up the cost of the membership. Plus, PSA seems to actually turn those around pretty quick on your first sub.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

MT is right. Join the lowest level and you get 6 subs. Costs you $100 I think so a little over $15 each. Then you can send in more when the $5 specials come along. Not a stupid question at all as it's been asked by many newbies over the years. Good luck.

Before you spend the $100, maybe post some scans of the cards you're thinking about submitting in case you're trying to waste some money and don't know it.

Also, it's not a matter of who would trust you to piggyback cards on their submission. What Neil went thru was unique. I would think you might want to get to know people better before you agree to send them your prized cards and also give them money!

SGC and Beckett let you submit without joining, most of the worthless grading companies do also, but just because they don't make you join a club doesn't make them a better deal. The vouchers you get cover the cost of grading for 6 cards that are worth between $100 and $500. You get a lot of benefits from joining.

  • SGC has far more grading consistancy and a superior product IMHO. If you collect labels for resaling to the PSA registry collectors then that would be the way to go. If you collect cards for the most accurate and consistant grading and a nicer end product SGC is the way to go.
I use both PSA and SGC

SGC for my own personal collection and PSA for cards to sell the label collectors.

With PSA stock price going down 6% today, despite the market going up over 500 points, maybe it's time for them to rethink their business model and forget about charging the $99 - just a suggestion.

They'd probably, in my opinion, windup making more money in the long-run, bringing in new customers.

I completely agree. If nothing else, reduce the price of membership.
