  • Tough times at the Post Office. I read in the coin forum thread they're even cutting back on overtime for their employees.

My company laid off 80 people yesterday, as have many of our vendors, with more layoffs undoubtedly coming next year. If only they knew the Post Office's secret for success, they would have just raised prices and kept their employees.

Guess who didn't see any of that increase? I actually got a pay CUT of about $12 a day. My wife's pay this year is down about $12K from same pay period last year.

They're spending a lot of $ on technology and trying to reduce the workforce. IMHO they could reduce support payroll quite a bit and be ok. It's amazing how many pencil pushers there are.

The USPS is allegedly looking at cutting 40,000+ jobs.

    Offering early-retirement to many folks.

  • My USPS postal carrier, a 27 year PO vet, said the PO is considering cutting delivery days for regular 1st class mail to 3 or 4 days a week in the near future.

That would force a few more people to use expensive "expediated services" for making deadlines etc.

The only thing that stands in the way right now is the enormous amount of "junk" mail that comprises 95% of the mail that is delivered daily.

85% of bills are currently either paid online manually, or are set up as Automatic Payments.

p.s. The above info has not been substantiated as of yet. Maybe someone else can vouch whether any of it is true or not.
  • I like the new small priority box.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.

  • I feel pretty lucky because I will make more this year then any other previous year and next year will be even better. Oh and I probably pay around 3 of 4 bills online which I've been doing for around 4 years now. I became tired of spending what I thought was too much to mail a bill.

Gas prices plummeting, economy plummeting....so their delivery rates go up - Tis the world of government run business.

i thought it was great that the post office some years back outlined contingency plans for delivering the mail after a nuclear war - I know if the commies bombed us, other than no food, contaminated water, radiation poisoning and unsafe shelter...getting my mail delivered would be my primary concern.

Nothing like that special card being delivered to allievate the pain of radiation poisoning.
  • im having a bad movie flashback... low fuel prices and the airlines are still raping their customers too.

Soon we'll have another thread to listen to people whine about how some poor guy raised his shipping on ebay another dime and how $3.00 for shipping is a little high.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I turned the big 30 last month. According to the insurance group I am now high riskdespite the fact that I have only cost my insurance $72 for the entire year. I need the 3% to help pay for the additional $1,200+ I'll have to pay in '09 for health insurance.

I say get rid of all the damn junk mail. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the junk days where I live, and the trash can next to the mail boxes (I live in an apartment complex with central mailboxes) overflows each day with all the junk mail the residents receive. If this was removed from the mailstream, it would go a long way to helping the USPS cut costs and time.
