1981 fleer star stickers

does anyone have a scan of a 9 or 10? i just picked up a couple of boxes and the edge chipping is horrendous on these guys. centering is good for the most part but i didn't know if the chipping is normal for these. the dark blue borders make it very noticeable.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

I have a Perez 9 pictured below. I have trouble with centering and color on this one as well.

I had a tough time with a couple of boxes of these. The chipping was crazy and the centering was not all that good from my boxes. I do have a decent Schmidt & Carlton that have outside shots at 9s with a Ryan that would probably get an 8.

I just opened 3 boxes of wax. With 5 cards per pack, gum on the top and wax on the bottom, you're pretty much down to only 3 possibles per pack. Of the 3 boxes I have about 15 cards that have a shot at high grades. And for some reason 4 of them are Fergie Jenkins.

If anyone else collects these and has more scans, could you please post them? I want to see how lenient PSA is on centering, edge chipping and print spots.

Also, if you are working on a set and don't care about centering too much or wax stains, let me know. I've got a huge lot of cards you can have.

Well three boxes cost me like $20, so I'm going to say no.

It's not a bad set though. For the reasons I stated before it certainly seems like it would be a challenge in high grade. Lots of HOFers, relatively small set size, and the photos and printing are much better than the regular 1981 Fleer issue.

There are some 9s on ebay with BIN prices around $10.

Yeah I think if you're willing to put some time into searching through packs, 9's really aren't that tough to come by. 10's are going to be a challenge.

Edit: Thank you by the way. I didn't realize some of those had scans large enough to be helpful. I'll check them out more closely.

This one makes me feel a little better about what I've got. PD and chipped edges... seems like a pretty lenient 9.

I bought several boxes last year, but I'm still looking for these two for my player sets.

    slantycouch,

While you are looking through your stickers for DavidPuddy, I could use the following stickers if your offer to help is for anyone:

    1981 Fleer Sticker Cards:
    9-Mike Schmidt
    13-Carl Yastrzemski
    43-Rose/Bowa/Schmidt
    85-Steve Carlton
    NNO-Reggie Jackson CL
    NNO-Mike Schmidt CL

I don't care too much about centering or slight stains--these are for some of my raw player collections. Thanks in advance if you can help any.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
  • I don't quite remember collecting the stickers, but I did just purchase an 81 Fleer regular baseball set online, cheap. Back in the day it was my favorite set, although it's not well-regarded today. Brings back a lot of memories.

I'm pretty sure I can help you out with all of those! I'll shoot you a PM tonight.

I sent PM's to everyone looking for cards. Just shoot me your addresses and I'll get the cards I have out to you. James I think you'll be especially pleased.
  • I busted a box last night; but fell asleep before i could scan them lol. i got a lot of decent ones, but in every pack you get one card ruined by gum and the other ruined by wax lol
  • gameusedhoopgameusedhoop Posts: 3,625 ✭✭✭✭
Is the wax on the front or the back of the card? If it is the front it should rub off with no problem, if it is the back I imagine there will still be a shiny residue.
  • slantycouchslantycouch Posts: 1,704 ✭✭✭
Front card = gum on face
Back card = wax on back
  • on half the gummy cards i was able to take a Swiffer dust pad and get the gum off lol.

    Just joking around but.....

Why the heck did they put gum in with the cards? Don't they know that may ruin them?

Once again, just joking around, I am 41 and remember when the gum was the selling point of the product. That's how I started, when I was 7 my dad worked a couple nites a week at a convience store and usually bought one pack of hockey cards for the gum while he was there. He would bring the cards home after I was in bed, leave for his "real" job before I woke up in the morning, and I would get the cards when I woke up. Just like the card fairy had come again!

  • Bought a few boxes of these. Hoping to sub a few of these on the Juy special. Anyone got a scan of any random PSA 10 from this set?

It appears PSA 9's are worthless but PSA 10's sell for adecent price. Andre Dawson PSA 10

ldferg- I've noticed chipping issues as well. I've seen a few raw version of the 119 Murphy card, but didn't buy them b/c of the chipping. If I remember correctly, the picture consistency also was not great (fuzzy photo on some). If anyone is preparing to sub and you have a promising version of #119, know that you'll have a buyer for a 9 or 10. Thx.
