"wavy" PSA labels

I have some PSA slabs where the top red and white labels are not perfectly flat. It's hard to describe but there are non-uniform "bumps" in the label (if somebody can host pics I can try to scan or take photos). The majority of my slaps have flat labels, some have subtle bumps that you probably wouldn't notice unless looking for them. But then I have some where the waves run throughout the label and they look horrible.

Just wanted to get everyone's thoughts and opinons; is this fairly common or a possible sign of tampering? From what I can tell, the cases holding these wavy labels don't appear to be compromised. I picked up some UltraPro PSA Clam Shells today at Shriner's and noticed the wavy labels when placing my slabs in them.

The wavy gravy label flip is not uncommon with PSA slabs at all and is very annoying.
I've got a bunch of them.

  • Not that uncommon. They don't bother me unless they are really bad, but I would prefer a wavy label over a frosted corner or a bad grade.

    Pretty common.

Likely a result of variations in the composition of the paper used to
make the particular batches of labels form time to time. Different lots
of ink can also cause the paper to "shrink" or wrinkle/warp.

It is not, generally, a sign of tampering.

Just as some "frosting" or cloudiness in a slab is not necessarily a sign of tampering. I still chuckle when someone breaks out the "tampered" comments when they see even a slight variation in a holder. Whether it is caused by the scanner, the background, or is the result of handling, a few on these boards preach as if they are experts on the subject and condemn something with little evidence other than a crappy scan. I can't understand why someone would put their reputation on the line over something that is so subjective and has such limited substantiability. Unless I'm more than 90% certain, I wouldn't consider stating something of the sort. I think we found that out with the Koufax card last winter when I was crucified because the dust on one scanner put "print dots" on the card that weren't on the other card, even though I knew for a fact that it was the same card and later had that confirmed.
  • Now this gives a whole new meaning to the "Label collector" when your more concerned with the condition of the label than the cards themselves.

I always thought it was moisture getting into the slab.

I've got a bunch of PSA labels that have MINT 9 on them instead of GEM MT 10.
