How do you feel about non recessed screw downs for storage?

I was just curious how many of you use non recessed screw down holders to display your non graded cards. I have heard stories in the past of cards being ripped apart after long durations in a screw down holder. I guess this is due to the card sticking to the holder on one or both sides. Has anyone ever had any problems in this area? Is the forementioned scenario even a possibility? Please let me know what your thoughts are as I'm looking to display some non graded cards and was thinking of going in this direction. Thanks in advance for your input and I look forward to your opinions and experiences in this area. Chris

  • I use those particular holders as protection for ungraded cards when I ship them. I stick a half of a holder in a team bag with the ungraded card that is in a toploader.
  • If you're going to use them place the card in a penny sleeve first.

Dont use them to store cards for very long, They will squish the cards corners. You are right they may also stick to the holder and the card will stick to it if you ever try to take it out. Get rid of any if you have them. I threw mine away.

I've got another reason not to use them. I used to have a Jordan RC in one of those thick ice block holders and since I knew about the card possibly sticking, I thought I was smart to put it in a penny sleeve first. When I took that card out years later to submit to PSA, I discovered that my penny sleeve had a tiny dimple in it. Well, after I took the card out of the sleeve, the surface of my card had a tiny dent from that dimple in the penny sleeve. That was the reason why my card received a 8 instead of a 9. Needless to say, I have never used a screwdown since - I can't even bring myself to use the recessed ones.

I think I did it to a couple of my treasured cards, I torqued the screws as tight as I could with the thick acrylic type slabs. image

I would agree, for storage... $h!t can em.

But they sure make nice displays, I just turn the screws til they set, don't snug em. And definitely go with a sleeve.
