How should I feel about this one???

Hey Boys,

I'm not trying to disparage Huggins & Scott Auctions in any way because I received tremendous customer service, but I've been feeling the sting since my consignment ended this week. The same item sold a year ago on Mastro, yet my item received only 1/5 of that sale price -- excluding buyer premiums. This is not something I've had to say in my lifetime, but I could've netted considerably more on Ebay and that burns a little. I'd like to withhold any further details about the item because these guys were very stand-up, but I would love some feedback from those of you who have consigned with them in the past, and whether or not the desired prices were realized. Also, do any of you think that they are lacking in notariety, and as such, they require a bit more press and word-of-mouth to grow their bidding community? Or, does this economy really just suck and the environment for selling these particular niche items (pre-1960 BB cards, btw) is in the doldrums? I'll answer any follow-up questions to the best of my ability, but please keep in mind that I'd like to preserve some anonymity and honor the reputation of this auction house, as best I can. Furthermore, I'd really like to return to them in future, but I'm very squeamish about that. Thanks in adanvce!

Regards,

Scout

  • the economy truly does suck. In such an auction is there a reserve, did you have minimum price? Without details its hard to discern the demand/popularity of the item in question. Perhaps it didnt get the exposure it needed to sell??

If you have decent feedback you will almost always net more selling the item on Ebay yourself. Unless you've got something really special that will sell for crazy money, giving up huge percentages on buyers/sellers premiums will have a big impact on your bottom line when selling run of the mill items. If you have no clue about what you have, and don't care what you get for it, then use any catalog auction house for similar results. If you know about what you're selling and want the best chance of making money, then sell it yourself.
  • Like the other poster stated, it's hard to give an opinion on this without more details. I don't know if they would charge more, but maybe a reserve should've been put down to protect your investment. Many factors could come into play for the reasoning for the 4/5 in price drop; the economy, crazy register set owners competing for the same item, maybe the item wasn't as difficult to get as before, lack of advertisement, etc. I know I've had a wild hair up my butt for some oddball pre-1960's bb items in the past where I would bid crazy money, then after it past, I wouldn't think of paying any amount for something similar. Just one of those spur of the moment things.
Can't you give us a hint of what it is? I don't think it would hurt the rep of the auction house. Things are cyclical. I sold a PSA 10 1985 Mark McGwire card for $1100 many moons ago. Now I probably can't give them away if I had one. I know this probably doesn't compare to what you have, but again, without more information it's really hard to say.
  • Hey again,

OK, this was a 1950's niche set, that included a few hofers, as well as a number of PSA graded cards -- including an 8. There was a reserve on the item -- modest in my opinion -- and the final sale price was only five percent more than the reserve. I knew exactly what I had to sell, and this was my first time consigning through an auction house. I've got perfect Ebay feedback and sold over 30K worth of cards last year, and I was all smiles, but I wanted to try my hand in the auction market after reading a number of favorable articles -- including one from Joe Orlanda in a recent SMR issue. I don't sell much anymore because I'm just a collector at heart, but it's a great way to liquidate surplus inventory to be invested in something more interesting. In any case, I appreciate the feedback thus far.

    Take care,

    Scout

Sometimes things can get a little too niche. The more common odd regional and Canadian issues don't have a large bidder pool. If you were the winner of the item in the previous auction maybe it was only you and one other person who drove the price up. Remove you as a bidder in this auction and it there's nobody pushing it up.

Scout, not that it will make you fell better but I had about 12 items I put lower bids on and lost most of them by just ONE bid. I think the prices realized were a bit lower, but not sure why. The players for hi end stuff are not affected by the economy, in fact, they could make more in a down market. Sorry to hear about your item, maybe it is just finding that miche market? I had considered consigning a 1900's non sport lot of all 1/1's but I declined when they would only commit to a reserve which would cover the grading fees.

  • Well said, Ted. Fortunately, I had next to nothing in the item, as much of the set was payment for services rendered (help with a cross-town move). However, had this been an item I was actually partial to, I would've been crushed. In any event, I've still got some C-Notes coming my way, although far fewer than I had hoped, and I've got my eyes on a few 1915 CJs. Wish me luck!

Also, just looking at my bidding history this last few weeks and weeks coming...OUCH

Last week was Mile high, Brokelman an dluckey., and heritage auctions, this week huggins and scott, next week sloate, mastro, the the following week goodwin and Andy madec. I have stack of catalogs next to me with the pages dog-eared! I have only won one lot in the last four auctions to end image Still have mastro and Goodwin to go, have checked out Madec as of yet. It was a rough few weeks for budgets I believe, especially if some lots were going low, it encourages you to spend more than you got!

GL on the cj's there are a few lots in Mastro I am bidding on, please PM so we dont clash heads image I am happy to stand down with the upcoming once a year card show next friday!
