What are your greatest or most profitable raw card purchases?

I'd like to know what are some of everyone's best raw card purchases. I'm not talking about great cards where you had to pay top dollar. I'm talking about the ones you bought at a great price and then submitted and got a grade that made the purchase very profitable. I've made a few while putting my '61 set together. Here is the most recent.

'61 Yastrzemski Auction

and it turned into this

6 1 15615126 NEAR MINT-MINT+ 8.5 1961 TOPPS 287 CARL YASTRZEMSKI STAR ROOKIE

    Havent tried that on many. Bought a Topps Chrome Tim Duncan RC for $50 way back when and PSA graded it a 10, which I sold for just under $300.

    I did buy roughly 300 Ryan Howard Bowman, Bowman Chrome, Bowman Gold rookies the year he was called up for an average of $4 each and have sold most of those off at a pretty nice profit. Never got them graded since I noticed they arent commanding a super premium.

    I paid a nickel each back in 1955 for my first 3 52 Mantles.

    Still have 'em, but never got 'em slabbed.

    They make nice Safe Deposit Box stuffers!

    Bought this raw for $80

    sorry for the poor scan. I'm like 90% sure it would cross to a PSA 8 if and when I decide to do it.

    Mike,

    great looking card and a heck of a pickup for $80!

    I agree it should be an easy 8 if the corners are sharper than they appear.

  • Bought a KSA 7.5 1958 Topps Bobby Hull rookie about 3-4 years ago. Had perfect centering which was unusual for this card. Broke it out and sent it to PSA and came back a PSA 7. Would have got a 7.5 if they had half grades back then. I paid 900.00 Canadian for the card and sold it on e-bay for 3200.00 US.
    Thing is this is one card i regret selling.

  • A few purchases come to mind for me. I bought a '72 Tony Perez raw for $2 and it came back a PSA 9, that was about 4-5 years ago. Within the last year or so I've had most of my most profitable raw card purchases. 1st- '63 Topps Jim Coates, purchased raw for Beckett BV which was $5. Graded a PSA 9 and sold on eBay for $338. 2nd- '64 Topps Willie Mays purchased raw for $35. Graded PSA 8. I still have it. Should be worth around $200. 3rd- '63 Topps Don Drysdale for $25. Graded PSA 8 and sold for $150. 4th- '63 Topps NL HR Ldrs. bought for $25. Graded PSA 8, sold for $150(same seller as Coates). 5th- '63 Topps NL ERA Ldrs. #5, bought for $15. Graded a PSA 8. Sold for $150, same seller as Coates and NL HR Ldrs. I doubt I'll ever top the profit on the '63 Coates... but I'm still trying!!!
  • well, i didnt get them slabbed; just flipped them.... a huge lot of 1964 topps stand ups. this was a few years back and I wish i still had them though lol they would be mostly 6's 7's and 8's. nearly 3 full sets for about $500

    I think I've posted this in a few of these "best raw purchase" threads. Several years ago bought a 1959 Topps #470 Stan Musial 3000th hit card raw for under $40...sent to PSA and came back MINT 9 and sold on Ebay for just over $700 I believe. Also bought a Nap Lajoie 1913 Parker Bros. (red version) card raw for not much, prob. under $50...came back a PSA 10 and sold for over $800.....don't think I'll every top those ones!!!!

    My best was a 1982 Topps Traded Ripken for $9 back in 1987 when I was 11 years old. I sent it to PSA in April 2007 and it came back a 9! Not bad for a kid keeping his favorite card in good shape!

    1955 Bowman Russ Meyer, #196:

    Purchased raw on Ebay for $1.00

    Sent to PSA, and slabbed 8 (as part of a free sub).

    Sold for $40.00

    I'd say 40X isn't a bad return.

    I bought (all 1961 topps) Mantle, Koufax, Banks, Musial, Killebrew, F. Robinson for $25.00 (1982 or 1983)

    Mantle = SGC 84
    Koufax = SGC 84
    Banks = SGC 80

    I sold the Musial and Killebrew here on the BST, and I still have the F Robinson raw.

    a few months ago I won a raw 51 Bowman Campanella for $50.00 and it graded SGC 84.

    55 topps Podres GAi 7.5 for 50 bucks, sold as PSA 8 for 1500 (8's are now close to 2k)

    55 topps Norm Zauchin raw 60 bucks, now PSA 8 second lowest pop in the set, should be 1500-1800 card depending on whose bidding

    8.00 grading fee for a 1954 bowman Wes Westrum that graded a mint 9.

    it is a pop 2 card and it is the scarcer variety.

    I'm hoping one of the whales needs/wants it.
