Wow, Buyer StteveGolf Has Spent Some Serious Coin In The Last Month On Cards ...

I was watching this auction for a 1954 Topps Ernie Banks PSA 8 that sold for $2,411.56 to StteveGolf. Checking out his buying history, I saw that he has spent some serious coin on cards recently; to the tune of ~$38,000.00 in the last month alone. I think that's good for the hobby.

Bear in mind, it's not the winning bidder who sets the price....it's the 2nd place man, for without his bid, the winning bidder wouldn't be as high as he would be......make sense?

Still, it's the guy with the deeper pockets who keeps the 2nd place bidder in 2nd place.

I recently sold a card to Steve and he was a pleasure to deal with

I didn't realize at the time he was spending so much in cards . Wow thats alot of dough in a short period of time

Funny thing about the transaction is that he overpaid for the card he purchased from me by $100 . I guess he was losing track on how much he was spending . And yes i did repay him for the error lol

Now is the time to buy if you can stand it. Goes for real estate, stocks, and baseball cards too I would assume.

Maybe he was smart and took his money out of the markets before the crash... and he's all "Well, I can put forth the effort to put it into AAA bonds and metals.... or I can buy sports cards."

    Bonds = boring
    Sports cards = not boring

With the way the economy is, it's not like he could do worse with his money... apart from setting fire to it.

What seems like a lot of money, to some people, may only be a drop in a bucket to others.

Some of my retired buddies, none of which are over 55 years old, wouldn't think twice
about spending $20,000 a month on their interests, be it golf, baseball cards, or casinos.

I'm probably the most sensible of the bunch when it comes to dropping big bucks on whims,
but it all boils down to spending within your means, or what you can afford.

I think most big spenders of sportscards do spend within their means. Dimitri Young might be
a good example. I'm sure StteveGolf is another.

Keep in mind that if you're only in your twenties or thirties right now, being able to spend $100
a month could be a luxury and it's probably all you should be spending on cards, depending of course
on your financial and family situation etc.

Just be careful not to put your whims ahead of your family ... ever.

A few of my buddies that I mentioned above are some of the most miserable rich divorced men alive ....
they have beautiful collections, single lives, ugly women, and many regrets. image

My wife died in a car accident a few years back; I'd trade every cent and card I own to have her back.

I know this guy well, as I have lost at least 6 auctions to this guy over the last month or so. Steve is putting together a Post WAR HOFer's Set and is currently #4 on the list. The cards he purchases that arent PSA graded, he is buying on the speculation that he can cross over to PSA for a high grade. Nice guy and absolutely DEEP pockets.

    PoppaJ,

I'm sorry to hear about you losing someone so dear.

I do agree as it is tough to balance the two sometimes but family first..then hobby second.

Although it seems hobby is always fighting for the top spot, you won't know what you had until you lose it.

Previously, I started this thread about mets-71. There I noted that from March 14, 2008 to April 13, 2008, he won auctions totaling $109,804.03 and from April 4, 2008 to May 3, 2008, he won auctions totaling $94,698.94 (some overlap from the previous amount.) Well, from September 20, 2008 to October 20, 2008, he won auctions totaling $69,806.76. Obviously, I missed some months there, but I'd image his buying habits were fairly similar. As such, I estimate that between March 14, 2008 and now, he's won auctions totaling $500,000.00 to $1 million on ebay. Now this mets-71 is a true whale!

P.S. You can note that in the past six (6) months mets-71 has won AT LEAST 3005 auctions and 4658 auctions in the past 12 months. Wow.

This is the guy that kills me. A while back there was a thread about eBay nemeses and I posted about my adventures with him on a 66 PSA 8 Lou Klimchock card. It's a SP hi # and it is a semi tough card, but I think the two of us have driven the price of this card up in the last few months. According to VCP, 8 of these cards have been auctioned off in 2008 and mets-71 has won five of them. Five Lou Klimchocks!!

Then there's the 66 NL Rookies card # 591 in PSA 8. Another SP hi # tougher than the Klimchock. Three cards have come up for auction this year. Mets-71 has won them all. These are just my dealings with him. I can't imagine the headaches he's caused others. If anyone has a PSA 8 1966 Lou Klimchock #589 or a PSA 8 NL Rookies #591 for sale, please shoot me a PM.
