Western Union money transfer only payment accepted??

I just received a very unusual email from the ebay checkout after winning an item from Steve at BBCE:

from: "checkout@ebay.com" <checkout@ebay.com>
Notification of Payment for eBay Item:

Our records indicate that you are the winner and as eBay Policy you are obligated to arrange the payment immediately after the listing is closed. The seller bbcexchange [ebay@mailboxplan.com] is unable to rec eive any payments at this time through Paypal because seller's account is temporary locked. If you already made the payment through Paypal your account will be credited back shortly when the seller's account is re-established. A bid or Buy It Now purchase on eBay is considered a contract and you are obligated to purchase the item. Payment approved only for this transaction: Western Union Money Transfer.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I know that Steve's email is NOT ebay@mailboxplan.com like stated in the above message.

  • You're obligated to pay by one of the methods listed in the auction. Unless wire transfer was the only option listed, the email has no merit. It looks like a scam to me.
  • Did the email actually come from eBay, or are the headers hacked?

When you put the mouse pointer over the e-mail and other blue links, do they have ebay in them followed by lots of junk?

Sounds like a spoof scam to me. They used a recent auction to try and trick you into paying again via western union, which you can't get back.

Log into your eBay account and check your messages on the system. If that email isn't on there, it's a scam.

The Western Union thing sounds shady. You better just send cash.

I would not do a money transfer under any circumstances on an auction with someone you don't know. Even if you overlooked the payment, I would tell them you decided to not do it with a money transfer. End of story,

<< <i> Steve at the BBCX would not send an email out like that. >>

That's because when you get a fake email which is likely a fraud it allows them to get all of your banking info if you attempt to do so,

Good idea, but don't forget to write "CASH" in real big letters on the outside of the envelope so the seller don't mistake it as junk mail. image
  • You should probably just send cash to me and then I'll take care of everything for you. I charge no fee for this service.
