Going to an auction, quick help anybody? Edited with sold prices.

Going to an auction in a little bit, they have a complete run of Baseball Digest from 1948-1956, wht kind of price should I be looking at, look to be in real good shape except the owner wrote his name in pencil on the front cover of all of them. They also have a few mini pennants with a picture of a player on them and the player name at the bottom, pennants are about 4-5 inches long, anything on them?

UPDATE:
The whole bunch sold for $210, they also had an old Cubs pennant (I'm guessing from the late 40's?)with I think the name was Joe Tinkley or Tink something with his picture, it was a vertical pennant about 18-24 inches long, sold for over $200, the other mini pennants went for $15-$30 each, I didn't even recognize any of the names, also had three of the old indoor wooden bats, the group went for $80. I think everything was way too high except maybe for the bats.

Anybody else have any input or thoughts on this?

I'd pay somebody ten bucks to take them away for me.
  • Wow, I thought they'd be worth something.

they surprisingly dont carry as much secondary market value as one might suppose. If you wanted them for your own use, then go for them, but if you are thinking profit......avoid

Yeah, old mags just dont bring in the money you would think they would. I had a run of SI from about 1979-1990, including the first Marino, first Jordan, and a few decent stars. Got about $20 each for the Marino/Jordan, the rest I sold at our garage sales for a few bucks

The name is Joe Tinker from the 1902 to 1916. Hall of famer and part of the famous infield double play combination Tinker (Joe) to Evers(Johnny) to Chance (Frank). Not sure of the value though on the pennants.

If the "18-24" vertical Joe Tinker pennant was a 1916 Ferguson Bakery Photo Prize Pennant (see Page 160 2008 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards), it would be worth $5,000-10,000+ in nice condition.

Mags that are pre WW2 bring decent bucks.

I sold some Ring magazines for a decent penny that were in nice shape.

Having a complete run helps too.

    Good for you.

As for those pennants I think they have 2 sizes.

I saw a thread about them on 54 not too long ago.

    Good for you.

Anybody have a picture of this?
  • Any chance these were reissued or reproduced in later years? That sure looks like the one at the auction except the auction one had a much lighter shade of blue, but that could have been due to fading. Just looking for a reason not to hang myself after seeing that.

If the smaller ones looked like the one below, and this was much larger it was indeed the same.

There have been no identified reproductions of either small BF2 pennants, or the large premium versions. While the fakers in China could certainly do it, they wouldn't have the vintage look that nearly a century of ageing imparts.
  • Looks like I missed out on some amazing buys.
