There Are Deals To Be Had ...

By no means am I flowing with cash, but I do have a few extra dollars to spend on cards. That said, I've noticed that some (or a lot) of dealers are now listing their cards for sale under a general auction, e.g., starting bid of $0.01 with no reserve and letting the auction fly. These are the same dealers who listed the same card with high Buy It Nows/Best Offers and not budging on their prices.

But yeah, times are tough. No doubt about that.

I finally picked up a card I've been watching/best offering for about 4 months. Dealer wouldn't come down from his $299 BIN. I won it at auction (same dealer) for under $80. I had offered him much more than that at one point.

I have picked up a few deals on ebay and offline.
Collector of 1976 Topps baseball for some stupid reason.
Collector of Pittsburgh Pirates cards for a slightly less stupid reason.

I would've bid on it for the winter season, running low on firewood, but the shipping is $48!!

That brings up a good topic, anyone have suggestions on what years card stock to smoke fish with? ya know...for the little chief smoker..
I'm getting tired of applewood and alder...was thinking that 88 topps would have a nice musky smoke flavor to it..

On the Kelly Gruber cards, I just sent the seller an email inquiring into local pickup in lieu of shipping and handling. I suspect his response will be heck no.

  • Yes there are deals to be found. I collect 1960 Topps, and most auctions have been going for anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 off of SMR. Super high end cards are remaining stable for the time being, but the "Joe Six Pack, Hockey Mom" cards are dropping big time.
  • If the interenet would have been around in 1991 or 1992 that Kelly Gruber auction would have been worth about $15000.
  • pretty soon joe six pack will be selling his collection for pennies on the dollar to heat the house this winter; after he loses his state job because the government ran out of money image

I think 87 Topps would yield better results. Those wood grain borders look like they would give the fish a nice flavor.

I suggest a brick of about 200 Teddy Higueras, followed by a brick of 200 Craig Reynolds.
  • "brick of about 200 Teddy Higueras" using fat teddy will increase your calorie count; use a skinnier ball player image

'87 Topps provide a little flavor but '83 Topps are the best for an aged smokey taste. The '84 Topps were good a few years ago but they lose their luster if you keep them around long enough. DO NOT use '86 Topps unless you are cooking carp. imo.

Could use them to cover a bar.

I'm glad to see so many others know what smoking fish is all about, I mainly smoke summer steelhead and fall chinook salmon so I won't need any fatty's to smoke....I agree maybe a 50/50 mix of 1987 topps and 1983 Tony Gwynn should yield some high quality smoked fish.

I would think ideally 1968 Topps will bring some authentic vintage smoke flavor.
