What set is that from? Doesn't ring a bell.

Thanks for letting me know Allen. I ripped it up and threw it away.

But seriously, do you have any idea how many 1992 Donruss boxes I ripped to try and get one of these? Not only did I never pull a Ripken, but I didn't pull any of the Elite cards. I think I might try and put a set together now. Same thing with 1991 and the Sandberg auto.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Vito- 1992 Donruss Elite. One Elite card was inserted per 20-box case, and I think there were like 20 cards in the Elite set. Ripken is the only signed card.

I used to have four 5000 count boxes of that stuff sitting around...and I never pulled an Elite insert either...

That's an awesome card and one to hold on to. Do you have the Sandberg you spoke of?

Considering the standards of today it's amazing to think that Cal signed 5,000 copies of that card.

I pulled the Will Clark Elite in a box my dad got me at Big & Small lots. I was so happy to get that card.

  • Lee, that is my favorite Ripken card, hands down. I tried and tried to pull one but resorted to ebay to finally get a couple Ripken's. I did pull a Rickey Henderson Legends Series while popping those packs in 92 and I remember freaking out because it was such a rare pull and the card was beautiful.....ahh the good ole days. Nice pickup and great price.

No, don't have the Sandberg yet. There's one on ebay listed at $160, but the going price is $110-$125. I offered $135 so we'll se if he accepts. When I was a kid, the neighborhood convenience store was a Wawa and I used to go in there daily to see if they got any new boxes of anything in. In 1991, one of the neighborhood kids bought one pack and pulled the Sandberg auto- that was the news of the neighborhood for like 6 months.
  • NICE card!
    White Whales:
1996 Select Certified Mirror Gold Ozzie Smith
2006 Bowman Chrome Orange Refractor Chris Carpenter
  • Congrats!!!

DNA that bad boy, and you might wana use the blue label they use when doing auto grade only, it will match the color of the card and look great together.

That's awesome Lee, definitely a dream card for any early '90s collector. The only card I ever pulled from that set was the Gary Sheffield.

I promptly unloaded it at the hieght of his popularity in the middle '90s.

I've eBayed a few Thomas' over the year though.

Very nice. The Will Clark is from 1993 and is absolutely plagued by fading autographs. Your Cal looks really strong. I have no idea what the other players sell for, but I know the Wills are a lot cheaper now than they were 15 years ago...

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

    Very nice Lee
  • lee...i empathize with your struggles. I opened tons of 91 and 92 donruss packs as a kid to try to get an elite insert. to get an auto elite must be orgasmic.

  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
Yeah Danby, it must've been like hitting the lotto back then. Nowadays you can pull a $200 card and lose money on the box.

On the plus side, I have a ton of Dave Nilsson and Ruben Amaro Jr. rookies so I might get some money back if they ever pan out.

Sorry, I guess it's confusing to read my posts, but I didn't pull this card from a pack. I got it the old fashioned way- by overbidding on ebay.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
Are you going to drill through it?

    Steve

    Good for you.

Maybe, I haven't decided yet. I actually might drill a hole through all my cards, that way if any of them get stolen I'll know they're mine.

I remember a local card shop owner that used a metal detector to scan the boxes for these cards. He would buy a case from Sams Club and then take them back if he didnt get a hit. Not even sure if it worked but I wrote a letter to Beckett questioning them about the technique. The cards mysteriously disappeared from the price guide in the same issue that my question appeared.

Wow, that blows my mind that, that card had been sittin in that exact spot all of those years just begging to be pick and it finally was .

The best part about it is that it went to a fan of the player .

Congrats on that , Would have like to have seen your face as you noticed what it was image
  • Lee, very nice pickup , have that sucker slabbed . I think I ripped a case in 91 & 92 and got a nolan ryan & a tony Gwynn not autographed but pulling those cards were like hitting the Lotto back in the day. Enjoy the card and keep Chaz away from it LOL.

Geez Lee, I have about 5 of these sitting in my old lunch box collecting dust in the basement. You should be more vocal about cards you are looking for, ya never know someone like myself might be able to help you out.

  • I pulled a Terry Pendleton Elite back in the day. It use to book around $80. I think I sold it on Ebay last year for $.99. Nice card Lee
  • So lets do some math. If there were 20 or so of these like you said (I have no idea, lets just say there are) and they all have print runs of 10,000 except for the Ripken, which is 5,000 and there is only 1 per 20 box case.... that would mean they made 195000 cases of that crap. (almost 4 million boxes) Can't be right, can it? Maybe there are only 10 different Elite cards and that would mean they only made 2 million boxes! No wonder its all worthless.
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,951 ✭✭✭✭
Very nice, that's one of those 'Holy Grail' cards for me. Maybe some day when I grow up I'll get one of them. I remember ripping those ugly freaking packs back in the day, hoping to pull one, finally I just gave up. That would look sweet slabbed... image
  • "that would mean they made 195000 cases of that crap. (almost 4 million boxes) Can't be right can it?"

damn skippy. heck they probably made MORE than that.

I pulled the 1994 Thomas Elite when I was collecting as a kid. It was the first time I had ever seen an insert and I figured it was just a regular card until I noticed the serial number on the back about a year later. I couldnt have been any older than 9 or 10 at the time. Not a clue where the card is now heh.

What does that ripken sell for on ebay. I have never seen one before. I have a hard time believing there were 5000 printed and signed.
