Thank God that 85T Kingman is ok
  • Is it just me or does the boiling water look like bubble wrap. Would be an interesting ploy to fill a pot with Bubble wrap and some Dry Ice to create the steam effect. I just don't see a slab of any kind holding up to that abuse
  • Very informative and useful site. Thanks !! Anyone have others I can link to my "Counterfeit" site ?

Cool slabs are that tough but really....who drops their card in boiling water? lol

The main threat is artificial/real light.

"Is it just me or does the boiling water look like bubble wrap. .."

    ///////////////////////

    Could be ice/bubblewrap/cigarette smoke.

However, it looks like there is a colander in the pot.
The colander has holes in it; that causes the boiling
    action to look like bubbles.

    The heating element is red.

  • While we're discussing bubbles ....

do ya think this kid meant for that bubble to look like that? image

I've heard that 1993 Mark McGwire refractors when cooked properly , have good fiber content.

I believe the tests were performed by a PSA/BGS board member. He posted these on the BGS site before.

Any plastic that wouldn't be able to stand up to water would never be used in industry unless that was part of the intent.

It's not the plastic itself. It's that it was TWO pieces welded together that held up to the abuse & that it remained intact and water-proof

Although, I really dont know if the card itself isnt warped from the heat

What the hell's the matter with you anyway?
  • Why is that 85 Topps card in a BVG holder? Isn't BVG for pre-1980 cards?

Oh, and the BGS holders are made of polycarbonate. The material has a melt temperature of approximately 310F. It only takes 212F to make water boil. Not a big deal.

Finally, if the guy running the experiement really wanted to destroy the plastic using a fluid, he could soak the holder in Spray N Wash or give it a good coating of oven cleaner. Both will do damage to polycarbonate over time. The result is stress corrosion cracking. The damage to the plastic may not be noticeable in one soaking, but repeated exposure with some type of reversing load applied to the holder will cause the holder to crack.
  • I think it said something in the article about with Becketts permission, or help ? Maybe they donated a screwup, practice slab etc.

UV protection is what we need. They do it for action figures......

    Not boiling water/oil/freezing resistance. Lame.

The slabs do have UV protection and are the only ones I'm aware that do...

I've ran a few test on all the slabs From PSA to GAI and have had interesting results in the past. If I can find my pictures I'll post them up...

They mentioned the UV protection on the 54 boards. I believe you are right that they are the only ones with it. This does cause some distortion/discoloring in the visibility (admitted by BGS in the same 54 thread), but I don't mind since it offers extra protection.

Good question on the rating. I'd like to know as well. I only learned about the UV this summer (when I saw the 54 posting) but older Becketts w/ BGS adds describe the UV protection.

But the big question...will these slabs protect you from STDs? If not, they are worthless!
  • Oops I just "got" not hot. image

  • So are the slabs airtight? Do the cards need to breath (like letting off any contaminents or gasses from the printing inks and cardboard being used)? There's a big thread in a comic book forum on how comic slabs aren't air tight in order for the comics to breathe. This was found out when some slabs were damaged due to flooding during the past rains up in the Chicago area.

If you want to get technical I believe the card may be exposed to the elements of acids from the print or cardboard itself and may discolor or deteriorate (hence yellowing in paper) I am hoping someone with some "photo framing" knowledge can chime in on this..

This is true with comis and posters.

If you want to know about the topic I would think the comic book domain would be a good place to reference.

From past posts I've seen on other boards both BGS and PSA are air tight while SGC does allow some water in when submerged.
