Possible mail theft

Between August 27 and September 4, I sold 14 cards on eBay, and sent them out on different days to various locations (NY, FL, IL, CA, etc). At the time, I wasn't using delivery confirmation (my mistake). Also, I was using a shipping service called PostNet to send out the cards via First-class USPS mail. As several of you have pointed out, it's better to go directly to the post office.

Starting a few days ago, I've received 7 e-mails from the buyers of these cards. None of those buyers have received their cards. So far, I've refunded over $100 to buyers. The manager of PostNet is checking into this, but no response yet. I then called the post office, and they suspect mail theft (during the time that PostNet was handling the packages), because it's very unlikely that seven different packages going to different states would all get lost at the same time.

  • Where are you at it is possible they got caught in the Gustav problems. They still should have arrived, but it is a possibility

    Weather is a possibility.

But, all those items - going to different places - deposited at ONE commercial mail receiving agency
    does look terribly suspicious.

Another possibility is that MANY buyers are now aware that items w/o DC are "gifts" from PayPal.

  • I live in Las Vegas. One of the cards I shipped on August 30 was to California, and it still hasn't arrived. It was a $45 card of Pete Rose. Two of the seven cards were sent to the Gulf Coast region (Alabama and Florida). Seems like all seven packages probably never left Las Vegas.

Not that it is terribly the same, but about a year ago, I sent out four payments to different bills I owed, NONE of the four made it to the credit card companies I owed them to. All four of my statements showed past due. I had to resend all four payments again along with my current payment. Next statement, BOTH payments had been credited. Somehow, these four envelopes, which were mailed together, going to four different companies, located from Illinois to Las Vegas found a hiding spot and stayed there for over a month and then reached their destination.

  • Two more cards mailed in late August and early September were not delivered. Total amount refunded to buyers is now over $170 (mostly PSA graded cards). I've revised the online report to the postal inspectors several times already.

The other problem is that my shipping time DSR has dropped from 4.7 to 4.5. Starting on Sept 9, I used the PO only (no more PostNet) and also used DC. The four packages I sent were all successfully delivered within a few days.

I would never trust PostNet with anything.
  • Thanks, just wondering why you don't trust PostNet. I definitely won't be going there any more. After posting the update about three hours ago, I received another e-mail from a buyer who didn't receive his card (a 1966 Topps football checklist). So I went ahead and issued another refund, this time for $19.

Most likely from reading this post?
  • Latest update:

Another card did not arrive. It was a 1996 Kobe RC, PSA 9. Total value of refunds is up to $210. One of the buyers suggested that I file a report with the local police.

  • Just found out that the PostNet store near my house is being investigated by the USPS postal inspectors. Several other people who used PostNet have also lost mail. One person sent a $500 money order that never got delivered.
  • Can you post which PostNet store is being investigated? I don't use them, but I wouldn't want any of my friends going there, unaware of the situation.
  • this sucks that it happened to you... This is the reason I use paypal only and print out the postage from the paypal site and always use d/c.

  • I am Paypal only myself, but do not print out postage with paypal, I do it the old fashioned way. Too many stories of packages not being scanned properly.
  • I mailed a Berra rookie (PSA 2) out about a month ago to Florida. Month later, it never arrived and for life of me cannot find the slip for the insurance. So, I"m out 125 plus the grading cost.

Every other card I mailed same day showed up and NO reason to think the guy is jerking me around. Bad luck. Sucks

Look at the sequence of any other DC/SC/Insurance ticket-numbers that were
    "mailed the same day."

One can very often identify the missing number by entering consecutive numbers
into the USPS search. If you hit the right number, you will see ZIP code info that
    should ID the missing package.

It's the PostNet located in Las Vegas, near the intersection of Flamingo and Sandhill. I've gone there for several years, but usually only to mail a letter. When I went to the USPS office today to mail a money order, the clerk told me about the recent complaints about PostNet.

I do the same. I write out the manual slips, head down the post office around the corner and have them scan the items in and give me an itemized receipt.

I don't use Pay Pal postage (but I have thinking about starting). I go to one of the two PO around here with the automated machines (or at least there will only be two in a month or two...they are removing the rest for non-use).

  • Sorry to bring up this topic again, but something strange happened today. One of the cards was delivered today, five weeks after I sent it.

The card was a 1976 Pete Rose, PSA 8, sold for $44 (including shipping) to a buyer in California on August 29. I brought the package to PostNet on August 30. A couple of weeks ago, I refunded $44 to the buyer because he had not received the card.

Then today, the card was unexpectedly delivered to the buyer. While some eBay buyers would just keep the free card, this buyer was honest and told me that he received the card. He's going to send a check in the mail.

Strange thing is, although I sent the card on August 30, the shipping date on the package is October 3. This means that the card was somewhere in Las Vegas for five weeks before it was finally shipped. I'm planning to call PostNet and the USPS postal inspectors, to see if they have any idea about what happened.
  • Nice. Hope you continue to have more like news to report.

  • Another card (1961 Roger Maris) showed up today, about four weeks after I sent it. I took it to PostNet on September 8. Not sure yet about the shipping date on the envelope. Does anyone know what might be going on? I've been collecting cards since 1961, but didn't start selling them until July 2008, so I'm still learning about problems with shipping, etc.
  • You should explain the situation to those buyers that are honest and have let you know the cards have started arriving. Ask them if they will send you the envelopes too. They may help the PO in their investigation.
  • I sent some computer ram via USPS priority mail (where I dropped off and had scanned at the post office using the manual delivery confirmation labels) and it took over a month to go about 25 miles from my house. I already refunded the money and about a week later, the ram showed up and it had the delivery date updated on the USPS website. The post office had no explanation for me and I had no recourse.

I instinctively didn't trust PostNet at first, and when my wife sent a package through them that never arrived, my instincts were proven correct. It was simply lost. No record of whatever happened to it was provided.

Apparently, when you ship through them, they seem to simply act as a middle-man. If you ship USPS, then some employee will need to take your package to the post office. There lies the potential for problems. It would seem very easy to steal a package and have many excuses to CYA.

Your package can be stolen by USPS employees, but I'd trust them more than some minimum-wage PostNet lackey driving his own car to the post office, probably stopping along the way to get some nice, private time alone to try to figure out what's in all the packages.

"Hey, this feels like one of those graded sportscards! Pete Rose rookie! Jackpot!"
