"Salesman Sample" cards from late 1950`s ??

Hi all

My question is this,, is there any sort of premium on these ?? I assume they were in sheets ?

Can anyone give me any info on the whole "salesman sample cards" situation ??

Thanks, Lee

Topps and Bowman had very different Salesman Samples....

The handcut singles from the strips of three/four are worth *significantly* less than the panels are worth.

If you provide more specifics to your enquiry, I'll try and help.

    Cheers

  • Hi Marc

    1957 topps

The card in question has been handcut to a single.

And SGC has slabbed and "Authenticated" the card as a salesman sample.

It is a rookie year card of a Hall of Famer

Lee- full panels seem to range from $1200-1600 in decent condition generally, I'd agree with Marc that cut singles would be significantly less.

    Lee:

For example, my specialty is the 1955 Bowman salesman samples. [I probably have the largest collection of panels and singles from the set, but will likely be selling all the singles I have...].

A strip of three, the "panel", can command $700+ if there is a HOF'er on it. With three commons, it may be a $200+ panel.

Cut up individually, singles can be about $20-$50 each [depending on neatness of cut, size, eye appeal, etc.], but an individual HOF'er usually won't bring much more than that. Even the Mantle cut up sample I have I purchased for less than $100-, but the Mantle panel was well over 10x that.

I think a HOF rookie card may have some marquee value, and you may get a hit from an interested player collector. That SGC is grading these may add some inherent value to it...

Since you are being somewhat guarded in your response, it is hard to evaluate more. There are five HOF rookie cards in 1957 Topps. I think Drysdale, for example, might have a lot of interest from a player collector, whereas I think Bill Mazeroski may not.

Hope that this is helpful. Given that it is a very thin market, especially for the singles as opposed to the panels, there is significantly more variability in price...I've purchased some of my 1955 Bowman sample singles for less than $10- each, but I've seen other commons go for 7x that...

  • PSA should start labeling cards as "Salesman Sample" instead of returning them as trimmed. That would be cool.
