eBay capping S&H costs

what the hell are they thinking?
have these people making decisions ever sold anything on ebay?
i got this message just a few minutes ago after listing an item:
"Attention Seller!
Starting in October, the maximum shipping cost in this category will be $4.00. You'll be asked to enter a shipping cost less than or equal to this cost for the first U.S. flat rate shipping service.
Get a head start on these changes by updating your shipping costs for this listing"
$4.00? do they know that media mail can be anywhere from 13 ounces to 70 friggin pounds?
do they realize many people sell books in large lots that cannot be shipped for $4.00?
ok those questions are rhetorical, but ebay is really sucking.

I am in the process of converting many items to free shipping.
so frustrating.. wish we could figure a way to end them
im not shipping anything free,he ll with em,it did the same thing to me perry, a 500 di/unit crest lot i had on, 30-40 pounds of metal, 12.00 flat priority up to 70 pounds would cover it to ship, and the same thing happened to me
i saw their new auction page and emailed em that i thought it sucked goat balls
-there is a place at the top of the screen where you can tell em what you think,so i did
they'll be getting alot of those i bet
use the shipping calculator, instead of going with the
limited price.
No handling fee will be able to be added to the calculator.

IF you go to the ebay-shop, you will be shocked at the ripoff
S+H they allow their so-called "licensee" to charge.

BINs with shipping-included in the price are the future.
Ebay will be loosing this Canadian seller in October.

It is really quite ingenious. eBay is going to become the biggest single retailer and does not have to outlay a cent for inventory.
Many a corporate dream has died by getting away from their original core business. It'll be fun to watch this one sink.
Buying Vintage, all sports.
Buying Woody Hayes, Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, and Jesse Owens autographed items
I sold a complete set of Fisher Price childrens hardback books about 2 years ago on eBay. The cheapest shipping option for me was UPS. Still cost $23. If I sold the same set in October, are you telling me I am supposed to eat the extra $19?

<< <i>is this in the media category only? >>
Most categories will be eventually capped. They are starting with the media since this category has the most listings and the highest rating of shipping gouging.
<< <i>I was thinking about going to "free shipping" and just adding the cost of the free shipping to the BIN. Then I thought how unfair that would be for a buyer if they purchased more than one card. They'd all ship together and all the extra cards would just cost me the weight, but the buyer will have paid my full worked in shipping cost times 2,3,4..etc. Would Ebay buyers be too dumb to notice they were getting ripped off by my free shipping? Could checkout be configured to offer a discount on free shipping or would it cause their computer to go "war games" on me? >>
you could always just hit the refund button in paypal if you really felt bad about it - The buyer would probably like to see you noticed and refunded him a few bucks.
foolishness.
Not all sellers use recycled shipping and the USPS does not do pickup for priority in ALL areas. Have you bought bubble mailers recently? They are going up faster than gas in many places.
<< <i>Isn't this only if you use the flat rate? Why not just use the shipping calculator and add a few pounds to cover materials? I've never understood why so many people use flat rate anyway. Could not the same package vary greatly on postage depending on where it was going within the country? >>
They are changing it to where it is capped across the board I think they are doing away with the rate calculator and making sellers specify their shipping up front. Using flat rate levels the playing field and makes your items more appealing to buyers across the country. You would not believe how many Hawaiian buyers I have had recently.
I've been to a few shows lately and rediscovered how nice it is to talk to fellow collectors.
Even with recent wholesale price increases (forget about bubble mailers, anyone notice that a case of toploaders went up at least $10 - $15 recently?), it shouldn't cost that much to ship a 2 ounce package (or 1 ounce, for those that like to gamble with the USPS). Sadly, I do agree that when eBay does start to cap shipping costs, there will be a big upswing in PWE shippers.
<< <i>So buyers should not have to pay for materials to ensure your item gets to them safely? When Ebay starts capping shipping fees expect to see a big increse in sellers using PWE.

<< <i>As long as the costs aren't unreasonable. Anyone charging $3.00 or more for the first raw card is either not looking hard enough for low cost shipping supplies, or is gouging their buyers. >>
$3.00 is gouging the buyer? LOL
<< <i>i dont think $3 is gouging. if you ship the card in a top loader, sandwiched between 2 pieces of cardboard in a bubble envelope with delivery confirmation (which i use on anything of value) hows it that overcharging? >>
as well as the actual cost to DRIVE to a local post office ......

The thing about HANDLING is it can go to anything the seller wants it to. All these people crying about 3.00 to ship a single card where were you BEFORE Ebay? It was not uncommon to pay 4.95 for a single card to be delivered. Those sellers for years included a portion of the ad costs into their shipping only since Ebay has been around have people whined about it.
Case of 500 bubble mailers: $44.90 shipped on eBay = .09 per mailer
Top loader case of 1000: $69.06 shipped on eBay = .07 per top loader
Sleeve case of 10,000: $68.75 shipped on eBay = .007 per sleeve
USPS First class mail for a 2 oz package with D/C via Click and Ship = $1.52
Total: $1.68 in materials. You may be able to find top loaders and sleeves a little bit cheaper depending on your location and access to wholesale prices for them if you are a dealer.
My added materials cost (how I ship):
cardboard protection: .04 per sleeve
team set bag: .02 per bag
label for bubble mailer: .05 per label
Total cost for materials and postage: $1.79 per card
If you want to tack on an extra $1.21 ($1.32 without my extra shipping costs) or more per card for handling, that's your call.
As for me as a buyer, I expect to pay $3.00 for cards, and don't complain about doing so. It's when I see people charging more than $3.00, or when they poorly pack the cards they ship, that's when I take exception.
In each sale you have this
Bubble mailer - approximately a quarter for a 4x6 if bought in bulk (Smaller...most people do not need thousands)
penny sleeve - well, basically a penny
top load - in bulk with shipping, these are 7 cents each now
mail with delivery confirmation is $2.13 for a 2 card mailer
There you already have $2.46
Now when youre in business, you have to figure all your costs into the sale.....Rent, electricity, taxes, fees (ebay and paypal), cost to get to the PO, etc etc. Ebay fees alone on a $20 transaction are over a buck, not counting your additional 3% yak on Paypal payments.
So from a standpoint of business expense, you have over 4 dollars on a $20 sale. Cost of a business are ALWAYS passed on to the consumer. In auction formats, you almost have to tack on some cost in the shipping and handling expenses. To think that $3 is gouging is a joke, obviously anyone who says that has not been in business.
You think the wonder weed wacker you see advertised on TV cost $19.95 to ship? No, but that is what gets charged to you. I say if the price of shipping is disclosed up front, then there is no gouge at all. If it isnt, then people may have a complaint, but these ebay clowns who bid on an item that clearly says $6.00 shipping then neg someone because of it should be run over by a truck
I cannot tell you how many times I have made money on cards from guys who try to charge 6 dollars or more shipping. I have bought many cards that reguraly sell for 20 to 50 dollars for less than 10 dollars delivered because the seller tries to overcharge on shipping. Then listed the item myself with a 3.00 shipping and sell it for the average going rate. Thats a decent flip of a card.

This is not true.
From the ebay site:
<< <i>What can I do if the maximum shipping and handling costs do not cover my expenses for packaging and shipping?
The maximum shipping and handling cost may not cover sellers' shipping costs in some cases.
If you are selling a bundle or quantity of items, you can use the shipping calculator to charge actual shipping charges. >>

and not get paid for your time, labor or materials..
If the item is under 1 pound the shipping claculator means nothing as it will cost you the same to ship the item anywhere in the US. Its on;y when over a pound does it become an issue.
ROCKS!!!!
And, "free shippers" get "free" subtitles, starting October 1. (Cost $1.50, w/o free-shipping.)
