Some Meaty Borders on this one

Anyway, many know that cards cut from sheets, sometimes make their way in slabs. And that sometimes, when doing so ... THEY CUT SOME BIG AZZ BORDERS (like this one)

Text

But my question is about the recessed area of this BGS case. Its much taller. It reaches the label. I only seen these on occasion, and always 84 football. Anybody know anything about them ? Ae they meant to hold taller cards ? Just curious, as they look odd with all that extra space at the top.

Certainly does looks a bit odd with that sleeve. Guess that's the Marino Rookie for the collector that like everything "plus - sized". image
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Sure is a nice card, it's got big stuff... lol.

I guess when a card is GEM, just that in itself makes it suspect.

I have a ton of BGS cards but this one is just ridiculous. Compare it to this one and it's 100% sheet cut

  • Oh, I know its sheet cut.

My question is about the BGS holder ... Why is the recessed area TALLER ?

I dont know how to feel about cards cut from sheets.
If they are cut to the right size,
they usually look much better than factory cut cards.
I guess if the carboard is authentic,
maybe WHO cuts the card is not so important.
    Time will tell on these

What is your attitude towards these cards ?

Would you spend the same amount of money for the same card, same grade, same holder, but even though one was factory cut and the other was cut from a sheet afterwards ?
  • I personally don't like the sheet cuts, especially when they are the highest graded version, with no equals.
  • will bgs slab the whole sheet if you send it in

I started grading with BGS before I ever graded with PSA. There is a guy at the local card show (Frank & Son) that takes submissions so it was my entrance into grading. I frankly like the slabs more than PSA but I collect mostly PSA cards now. I have a complete 1961 Fleer Basketball BGS set that I love and I'm still doing 57 and 69 basketball slowly with them. I rarely if ever buy already graded BGS cards so I examine them all before sending them in...but for the most part, I'm ususally buying cards for my PSA registries already graded.

As far as attitude toward sheet cut...I'm against them. I like cards that came from packs or vending. Should they grade them, probably not, but since I don't buy pre-graded BGS, to each his own.

Wasn't Some Meaty Borders the title of an album by The Who?

100 years ago T206's were inserted in cigarette packs and very little is known about that issue exept speculation by collectors today. It wan't important enough to keeps records about this cards. With that said, 100 years from now will any one remember that BGS grades sheet cut cards? I seriously doubt anyone will care when they discuss this card of biggest crybaby in the history of the NFL, errr I mean this Dan Marino rookie card.

Side note. Above statement uttered by a Bills fan that watch Marino beat the bill 100 times on a row. Ok it was only 23 times in a row, but sure felt like 100. image

100 years from now, they will probably still have rulers to measure "Meaty" overcut cards

I guess no one knows about the over-sized recessed area BGS cases ?

What do you want to know about them?
They are for cards that are slightly bigger than standard size format cards Like 1955 topps baseball I imagine.

I've had a few PSA slabs where the card was cut big from the factory or whatever and they placed them in Holders with a bigger recessed area with a card condom due to being to big. they probally use the case for the same reasons as above 1955 topps ect..?
