Help Me with Vintage Pricing Rationale

Guys, I am struggling to understand the pricing of vintage cards. From what I can see the SMR is extremely accurate if not a tick undervalued on most cards that are sold in the open market (EBAY). One Drastic exception, which is affecting me right now is with the 1968 Nolan Ryan PSA 8 RC. This card currently has an SMR of $950 but you can't touch this card for under $1500. Being new to these boards and fairly new to the PSA card grading family, why does this card command such a premium over SMR, and better yet, what does it take to get the SMR to update its pricing to a more true market price? Thanks in advance!

the world may never know... good question though... don't rely on the smr... ever
  • From what I can tell the SMR seems to be a little low, not crazy low and Beckett Graded Sports Card seems to dramatically high! I think I would almost prefer to know that the price I see in the SMR is on par with what the market is paying, if not a tick low, versus Beckett and knowing that I can expect to see sometime 50% of the value listed in the pricing. OF course, this is all thrown out the window with high subs on certain BGS graded cards, etc.

The average price on this over the last 10 sales or so is approx $1200. This is much closer than SMR on this card. Good luck as its one of my all time favorites.

Yes the last 3 have averaged just over $1,500 but if you're patient, and can live with less than perfect centering, deals like this one can be found.

PS - Welcome to the forums, and toss your SMR in the nearest trash receptacle.
  • Interesting Link on that Mastro Auction. Thanks for the heads up on the SMR guide guys!
