What are the marquee NFL teams?

I think the Cowboys, Steelers, and Packers would have to be on everyone's list. Besides those 3, what are the next 5?

Here's my picks:

Bears
Redskins
Dolphins
49ers
Raiders

I guess you'd have to have your defintion of 'Marquee.' I'd think the Giants would have to be listed on there and I'm not so sure that the Bears, 49ers & Dolphins would be in the top 5....

  • The Raiders? Not sure about that one. I think you would have to include the Patriots on that list.

Depends on what you are asking. If you're asking about current teams, here's the list:

    Cowboys
    Pats
    Packers
    Colts
    Giants

If you are asking about storied marquee franchises, it's a bigger list:

    Cowboys
    Packers
    Giants
    Colts
    Raiders
    49ers
    Steelers
    Browns
    Dolphins
    Redskins
    Bears
    Eagles
    Ron Burgundy

  • I was thinking historically. You can't have the NFL without the Packers etc. The NFL would go along fine without the Patriots, and I am in no way letting my intense hatred for the Patriots influence my judgement.

If you're talking historically, the Colts (mainly Baltimore) would have to be up there as well

I understand and they would have been in my top 5 *IF* they had stayed in Baltimore. Moving to Indy forfeited their marquee status. And this is coming from an Indianapolis Colts fan.

    Yes.
  • Come on! we are talking the most storied franchinse in NFL History? Thats not really to tough a question or debatable.

    Cleveland Browns

    Chicago Bears

    Green Bay Packers

    Dallas Cowboys

    Baltimore Colts

    New York Giants

You can put them in whatever order you want.

Steelers, Redskins, 49ers right on the bubble

  • Again, it all goes on the definition of "marquee". You can make 2 different sets of arguments, especially if you're going to consider pre and post merger.

Cleveland is certainly up there but zero Superbowl appearances exclude them from marquee status.

  • << <i>Cleveland is certainly up there but zero Superbowl appearances exclude them from marquee status. >>

So the Bears are granted marquee status for their pre Super Bowl history (1-1 record in the Super Bowl) but Cleveland is excluded for not making the Super Bowl? Meanwhile the Pats have made it to 6 Super Bowls (tied for second most) and the league can go on without them?

Are you trying to suggest a win usually isn't an NFL season highlight?

Their several pre-Super Bowl championships should make up for that IMO.
