No, i'm only going to sub some stuff. dealers are usually a bit overpriced but the selection of graded is usually pretty good.

August 29-31, 2008 - The Hollywood Park Casino & Convention Center 3883 W. Century Blvd. Los Angeles, CA

    SGC will be accepting submissions

Does this mean they will grade onsite ? ... I am very uncomfortable sending cards in for grading since I have only done it twice and one was a horrendous experience.

I don't know much of SGC, although I have many cards that they have graded. I acquired them when I bought collections in the past.

On a 1-10 scale with PSA 10 what do you think of SGC?

    Dear jimrad,

Sorry to hear about your experience. Are you in Southern California/Orange County. If so, have you considered stopping by the Collector's Universe Public Friday? It's held once a month. For September, its on September 12, 2008. I'm not a member of the Collector's Club, so this is the only way I can submit, which is fine since I submitted probably less than ten (10) cards over the years. It's held at Collector Universe Corporate Headquarters located at 1921 E. Alton Avenue, Santa Ana, CA 92705.

Obviously, with in person submission, you don't have to pay for shipping and handling and you have no concerns about whether your cards were received. And depending on what type of cards you submit (read: high value), they might let you pick them up in person (again, no return shipping and handling). Of course, there is the issue of personal time and effort. But it's the closest thing to peace of mind you'll get with PSA.

    Thanks Jack.
I just signed up with PSA and I am in SoCal so I WILL DEFINITELY be going to the friday submission date.
Now that I am old and not working I have time to get back into this hobby and I am trying to listen to what experiences the current traders are having.
I think I am going to try submissions with PSA/Beckett/ and one other company for the comparison of service/price/quality.

I am interested in the autograph authentication which is being offered at Hollywood. I notice that PSA shows it will be doing autograph authenticating at the City of Industry in Sept. That might be my best bet. I have 2 boxing gloves autographed by Muhammad Ali. I was there when he did it and one is actually personalized to me. I might keep that one. The other says " Muhammad Ali - the greatest of all times June 29,1983 " It is very nice but I think I can get a few bucks for it and I want it authenticated.

I have not been to Hollywood Park in over a year. Now that I work close to the site, I might stop by on Friday night. Is Friday night a good night to go?
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

Friday and Sunday are generally the worst times to go. A lot of tables aren't set up on Friday, and on Sunday a lot of dealers cut out early.
I"m really disappointed PSA won't be there, first time in 29 shows from what I hear. GAI, SGC (not grading on site but taking submissions) and Beckett will be.
Naxcom has said, once again, that this is the last show at Hollywood Park.

  • Hollywood Park died a miserable death.

I've been there a few times over the years, really can't think of much that jumps out. There's a guy with $5 graded cards, has a whole table full of them. Maybe 4 or 6 boxes. Found a few bargains in there.

Besides that and a few other tables, just nothing.

How much walk in business does Memory Lane, Mastro, etc get from the show? They're always up front.
  • I've been to Hollywood Park the last three shows and they seem to have the same cards there each time. The guy with the $5.00 table seem to be doing some business, but I found the graded vintage was way over-priced. At least when PSA was there I could submit a few cards. But now with no PSA I see no reason to go to show. Kind of sad.

  • I'll be there all day Saturday.

Just got back and I have to say that the traffic was very light - even for the autographs. Isiah Thomas and Elvin Hayes were there signing and there was nobody in line. There was some good vintage for sale and fairly decent prices on graded but it was disappointing that PSA wasn't there and I have to believe the economy being bad was a big factor.

I am a former SoCal guy now residing in the DC metro area. Holllywood Park is a joke now.

The economy in LA is real bad. Ya, the high end folks are doing fine, but they are by far the
minority. Can you say real estate depression !!

  • GriffinsGriffins Posts: 6,076 ✭✭✭
Depends on which part of LA you're talking about. Entertainment drives the economy of a large part of the city (especially the westside and parts of the valley) and in an economic downturn is the safest sector. I talked to my banker last week and she said the values on westside real estate is up about 9-10% over last year, due to high demand and lack of supply. The inland empire (which was overbuilt in the last decade) is getting hammered and OC is soft, but to say the entire area is hurting would be way off.

I agree with what you're saying but don't assume the entertainment industry is recession proof. I work in marketing for a movie company and I can assure you, even more so than usual, that jobs are very hard to come by right now. We've had three mini-major studios close up shop in the last 6 months. A lot of companies are hesitant to give out raises because the future and another potential SAG strike are unclear at the moment. Real estate here will always be overpriced if you live in the main part of town or the SFV. I can definitely see why real estate in the inland empire would tank though...if you work in the city, who the heck could stand the commute from there anyway?
  • The LA "economy" is quite strange, I'm suprised it's held up so well (with $4 gas, housing, traffic, etc).

I think the city has the largest income gap in the country (for a major city). I dont know where it ranks in the world, but it's quite bizarre to have neighborhoods with million dollar or 1.3 mil homes zoned to a school district with a 40% dropout rate?!? LAUSD. Some horrendous number.

The schools, the roads, infrastrasture, etc hasn't kept up with growth in some pockets of city (say, Santa Monica entertainment, or downtown).

I'm sad to see Hollywood Park go. You'd think there would be more people (i.e. kids from the 80's, early 90's with more money to spend). Or some sort of resurgence in show attendance. Too many distractions I guess.

The decline in the NBA, the steroid scandal, etc has probably hurt autographs and former stars. Isiah Thomas' NBA seems like a long time ago by now.

The farther we get away from it, it seems like everything peaked about the mid 90's. With sports stars, the concentration the leagues had.

But maybe it'll turn around, who knows.
  • The main reason that there will be no Hollywood Park Show is because the owners of that area sold of the park and will build retail shops in that area. When they lost their horse racing license (I heard due to bad track maintainace) the city of Inglewood and the owner of HP deided to sell the property to retail developers to build shops.

Actually I talked to the promoter on Friday. He wasn't sure if this would be the last one or not, he said the only reason it might be would be because HP keeps raising the fees he pays to have it there, and he can't pass those on to table holders. He thought the latest increase might mean this would be the last, but he said nothing had been decided, and no alternate venue had been found.

  • I think the same promoters did a show out at the Pomona Fairgrounds once, I wonder if they will go back to that place.
