Flipping Through A October 2001 Issue Of SMR

I went home this weekend and found an old copy of the October 2001 issue of SMR with Jason Giambi on the cover. Couple of things stood out for me ...

1. Mark McGwire single singled baseball selling for $3,215.00 - All I can say is wow.
2. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 10 selling for $275,000.00 - I believe that card would go for $1,000,000.00 now.
3. SMR on a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan PSA 10 - $20,500.00.
4. SMR on a 1986 Topps Traded Tiffany Barry Bonds PSA 10 - $3,500.00
5. SMR on a 1985 Topps Mark McGwire PSA 10 - $4,500.00
6. SMR on a 1985 Topps Tiffany Mark McGwire PSA 10 - $7,500.00
7. SMR on a 1993 SP Derek Jeter PSA 10 - $15,500.00
8. SMR on a 1994 SP Alex Rodriguez PSA 10 - $9,000.00
9. SMR on a 1994 SP Die-Cut Alex Rodriguez PSA 10 - $16,000.00
10. SMR on a 1998-99 SPX Finite Vince Carter PSA 10 - $6,250.00.

Also, does the SMR 100 Index even exist anymore? I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

Finally, for the 1952 Topps Mantle ...

PSA 5 - $7000.00 ... now $15,000.00
PSA 6 - $9000.00 ... now $20,000.00
PSA 7 - $14,500.00+ ... now $35,000.00
PSA 8 - $32,000.00 ... now $65,000.00
PSA 9 - $72,000.00 ... now $225,000.00

People certainly paid stupid money for those slabs. I remember paying stupid money in the late 1980s but nothing like these. Those has got to be some of the dumbest investors of all time (except perhaps for the Mantle).
  • I recall selling (3) BGS 9 1985 Topps McGwire rookies in a lot on Ebay for $2,850 back in 2000. I sure wish I could get 10% of that per for the remaining copies I have left.
