German Third Reich date/mint numbers?

I was questioned by OzzyAndy in another thread (Welcome to the Forum, Andrew (Andy)? We should swap our dupes sometime! I am always looking to upgrade or fill holes when I can without cash out of pocket if you know what I mean. I also like to help others when I can in their collecting habits with stuff I might have lying around... image

I didn't want to hijack that thread, so here is a new one. This is how I came to the number of 398 dates and mints of the Third Reich (I did not include Allied occupation issues or the one or two only known specimens of the Reichs Mark like the liteside US 1913 V or 33 St. Gaudens)...

KM 89 1 Reichspfennig, 29 possible coins...
KM 97 1 Reichspfennig, 36 possible coins...
KM 90 2 Reichspfennig, 28 possible coins...
KM 91 5 Reichspfennig, 23 possible coins...
KM100 5 Reichspfennig, 31 possible coins...
KM 92 10 Reichspfennig, 23 possible coins...
KM101 10 Reichspfennig, 36 possible coins...
KM 87 50 Reichspfennig, 6 possible coins...
KM 95 50 Reichspfennig, 14 possible coins...
KM 96 50 Reichspfennig, 36 possible coins...
KM 78 Ein Reichs Mark, 37 possible coins...
KM 79 Zwei Reichs Mark, 6 possible coins...
KM 81 Zwei Reichs Mark, 6 possible coins...
KM 84 Zwei Reichs Mark, 1 possible coin ...
KM 93 Zwei Reichs Mark, 24 possible coins...
KM 80 Funf Reichs Mark, 6 possible coins...
KM 85 Funf Reichs Mark, 1 possible coin...
KM 82 Funf Reichs Mark, 6 possible coins...
KM 83 Funf Reichs Mark, 12 possible coins...
KM 86 Funf Reichs Mark, 12 possible coins...
KM 94 Funf Reichs Mark, 25 possible coins...

Whew! OK, that adds up to 398 coins on my spread sheet unless I have a formula wrong (totally possible) even though I checked them after you said you have completed the Third Reich with 361 coins.

If you or anyone else has any corrections or additions that need to be included in this list please post them here! Thanks for looking everyone! I also list a total of 1186 possible coins of the German Empire (NOT including the States 2, 3, 5 10 and 20 marks... I also show 264 coins for the Weimar Republic... If anyone can offer corrected figures I am most intersted in hearing them... I will send a PM or email with my dates and mints possible that I have listed if anyone is interested or has different totals than I do to cross check.

Thanks,
Rick

  • Ok, I just realised where I went wrong with my counting. I was counting the actual coins in the folder (I don't have them properly catalogued yet) and I had forgotten I took the 1RM's out to put in my 1RM 1973-2001 folder. Silly mistake. 398 did sound familier.

I've just got 2 differences with the figures you quoted:
    KM#90 2 Rpf - I get 28 instead of your 29: 1936ADF 1937ADEFGJ 1938ABDEFGJ 1939ABDEFGJ 1940 ADEGJ
    KM#95 50 Rpf Nickel - I get 14 instead of your 13: 1938ABDEFGJ 1939ABDEFGJ

I will need to add up my Empire and Weimar numbers, was just seeing if you were collecting anthing over 1RM (I'm not really but will keep any unique 2 - 20 Marks i get.

I'd be interested in a swap of any dupes, As I said (although I think it got cut off), I live in Australia so there would be a little bit of postage. Anyway, I could send you a list of what I'm after and what I have surplus, email me at andrewcmeiernospam@nospamhotmail.com (remove the two "nospam"s). This applies to anyone else interested in a swap as well.

  • Hi Andy,

Your PM function seems to be turned off.

Could you turn it on please.

    Many thanks,

OK, a formula error on my part. Thank you! KM90 is 28 coins possible. I am now even closer to completing this series and the 3rd Reich...

KM95 Oops! 1938-D was listed twice in the Standard Catalog of German coins 2nd edition and I didn't follow up and check if it was supposed to be an "E" my first (but not last) known mistake on this series...

Minus one, add one... still 398 coins (I think) image

I have completed the Prussian (Empire era, 1873 onward) gold type set and have a few other dates as well including 5 duplicate 20 marks. Prussia is the only German state I collect by date and mint but I want to complete all of the other states Empire coinage by type and mint except for the gold which I am only collecting by type. I am actively pursuing all (Empire) silver coinage (date and mint) minted by the states from 1873 and beyond...

Thanks for pointing out my mistakes and I want to hear of any more errors you might find by looking at my lists. Both from you and all other fellow collectors of German coins... Preussen? 3MARK? Doogy? Uhmm, who am I missing? I know there are more here...

    Rick

EDITED TO ADD: What am I missing on the PMs? Marcel, you have a 2 pfennig I would like to have! A certain AU 1916-G listed on last weeks BST. I have trading material available as cash is really short right now...

That's the only reason I have not offered to buy it outright from you... image

Geez, I've never counted 'em. In general, I collect 3rd Reich only by type. I do collect the 2-5 Marks by date & mint; there are 99 total....I know this only because there is one hole left over at the end of my 100-hole album image -Preussen

  • I've just been trying to get a spreadsheet together to list Empire and Weimar coins and I've found the Empire coins quite difficult, because the German language references (Jaeger and Moneytrend magazine) show different varieties to the Krause catalogues.

Example: for 1 Mark, German references give a 1874H with small 4 in addition to the normal 1874H. Krause doesn't list this but list things like 1903/803D, which is not in the German references. It makes it hard to decide which varieties to include and which to not include in the numbers.

By the way, what does 1903/803D mean? I assume it some sort of recut die or something but not sure exactly what.

    Thanks,
    Andy

What do the mintmarks stand for? I think they are mintmarks anyway, small little letters usually at the bottom middle. I only have about 20 coins from Germany, dating from 1987-2001, and most if not all have them. I don't know what they stand for.
