Mutually beneficial baseball trades?

I realize it's too early to go NUTS for either Josh Hamilton or Edison Volquez, but the fact that they were recently traded for one another (and are kicking ass) got me to thinking...

What are the best baseball trades you can remember in which BOTH TEAMS got a player who immediately started putting up studly numbers and then kept at that pace for at least a couple of years??
<<Bonus points if the trade involves two (relatively) young and fresh players like Hamilton and Volquez.>>

Reds fans and Rangers fans both have to be thrilled about that trade, right? It's got to be a rare thing.

Dodgers got some good mileage from Delino DeShields when they sent Pedro to the Expos.

Back in 1971 when the Reds traded the Big Bopper- Lee May for Joe Morgan, et all a lot of Reds fans were not happy. Lee had a monster year for the Astros in 1972 and we all know the rest. As a Reds mark, I would do the Hamilton trade 100x over, don't ferget the Narron factor! Long term Volquez will make Cueto better and if the Reds fire mr pole and hire Mario Soto, watch out NL Central.

    - At the time Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez was fair, but clearly Toronto got the better end of that deal over the long run.

    - Rick Sutcliffe to the Cubs for Joe Carter and Mel Hall was a good trade for both teams. Sutcliffe won the Cy Young that year and the Indians got a great prospect (Carter) and a solid player (Hall).

Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz. Both teams got what they wanted out of the deal.

Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. But my baseball people love Ken Phelps' bat. They kept saying 'Ken Phelps, Ken Phelps'.

Matlack was not on the 69 team I think you mean Koosman.

  • Manny to the Dodgers...........
    Jason Bay to the Sox.

(too early to say it worked for "several years" but the "immediate impact" for
    both teams is undeniable)

Alexander got the Tigers to the playoffs. It was a classic 'trading away future prospect for proven veteran for immediate playoff help' scenario. And in that respect I think both teams got what they wanted.

Obviously if the Tigers had known that John Smoltz would turn into John Smoltz, the trade wouldnt have happened.

    Ozzie Smith for Garry Templeton??

great example. Obviously looking back with 20/20 hindsight, this deal seems ridiculous. But at the time it was considered an even swap...or maybe even that the Cards were getting ripped off.

Hanley Ramirez to the Marlins for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell. The Marlins got arguably the best young player in baseball and the Red Sox got a World Series championship out of it.
  • Ivan DeJesus to the Philadelphia Phillies for Larry Bowa and second baseman Ryne Sandberg.
Steve Carlton for Rick Wise worked out well.
