The Sept. SMR is starting to list half-grade prices for some sets. For an 8.5, they are running 40-60% over SMR for an 8. I was somewhat disappointed thinking that they would run a little higher, but I understand they can't go too high or it would devalue the price of a 9. For some star cards, I had been paying midway between 8 and 9 for an 8.5. Some commons have been about the same %; some less. I may have to rethink my buying as a result of this SMR pricing. You can say it's just a guide, but it's now out there.
Are you guys serious? SMR hasn't been accurate for at least 4 years and they do very little to no market research and rarely update their pricing. The range of accuracy for SMR pricing is anywhere from 20%-4000% on any single card they have listed. I could sit here and list thousands of cards in SMR that sell nowhere near the listed price. You might as well be using a 1991 Tuff Stuff.

Usually, the half grade is much closer in value to the lower grade...
You have seen 8.5's sell for less then straight 8's?
Really?
