Gold from Uruguay

Via the Fremont Elks Lodge Coin Show...

I am attempting to highlight the luster, but that comes at the expense of showing every little hit on this coin. It is very pretty in hand, but when you get close to it, it looks like it has been beaten up a little bit! It's got a carbon spot under the chin too. Apparently, I am an easy mark for a gold coin with rays on it.

About the size of a US Half Eagle. Almost exactly one quarter of an ounce of gold content. Includes edge lettering as a cool bonus!

An interesting side note on this coin. I purchased it raw in a 2x2. The 2x2 had a price tag of $300, but I got it for $240. Not melt, but i'm happy enough. I got my gold fix and am no longer shaking, cold and sweaty, so that is all that matters.

On the 2x2 was some whiteout covering up some previous text. I just scratched it off.

    It says:

"Book val $1850. Error? 0.2501 gold oz. $1850"

Yeah, I guess that $1,850 price tag would be an error in the book, wouldn't it!?!

There were quite a few of those 5 Pesos coin that came out of a hoard of mostly foreign gold that the Secret Service sold several years ago. It is kind of interesting, I still see these being sold in rolls occasionally, usually by Goldbergs.

That is a great coin. How about a pic of the edge lettering.

There were actually two of these coins, almost identical, at this small show.

The one I passed on was slightly cleaner but also appeared to be slightly circulated or wiped or dipped or something. It did not have the luster that this coin did.

When confronted with a choice between a carbon spot, a dull surface or no coin at all, I guess I choose the carbon spot.

That's okay, this is my first coin with a carbon spot. Some folks would move on. I did not want to wait. Seeing what I purchased the next day (today), I suppose I could have waited. But it's all good. When all is said and done and these four gold coins I purchased are laid out in front of me, I can truly say I am very, very happy they are in my collection! This forum creates a certain pressure to always strive for the best possible. I have a certain tolerance for reality and apparently a certain impatience as well.

    What a fun weekend!
