Wow, I've never heard of that one! Pretty good.

I do remember a few years ago, reading about an Ebay seller who had received a Walmart gift card as a payment.

Tell him you have all the cards he needs, but you'd prefer grocey store coupons as payment.

You can use paypal postage and deduct the 70 cents, add the stamps next to the paypal postage and it will go thru ok. Just figure it the usual way and subtract .70 when you go to pay with paypal.

Or give him the stamps back, short your postage 70 cents. He'll have to go to the USPS to pay the 70 cents.

Either way will probably earn you a negative. Who is the idiot so we can block him?

I just got a check in the mail for twenty-five cents. It was from a company stock account that got cleared and moved to a different brokerage house. A big whopping quarter remained, so they probably spent upwards of a dollar to send me a quarter.

I guess I now know why my company switched. image

I'd wait a week to mail him the package and then include a note letting him know that you would have mailed it sooner, but you didn't have any stamps.
  • When I took mailed payments it was pretty common for me to get cash and the change in the form of stamps. Its actually a pretty common thing among alot of older buyers.

    OK Perry - I'm in!

A lady comes to the office complaining about an error in her statement - she makes up this really cool spreadsheet and shows me where we "shorted" her 25 bucks and her husband paid for a cleaning that clearly was covered by insurance.

She wanted to know what kind of "creative" bookkeeping was being used? I wanted to stop her right there and ask: "lady, I was just wondering how many more times I'm gonna be insulted before this conversation is up?"

Long story short - she thinks she's owed 25 + 71 bucks? Well, after reviewing the ledger - there was another mistake and we actually owed $225 bucks!

I proceeded to explain - she stopped me and said "I don't care about all that...."

So, I cut her a check for 96 bucks (instead of 225) and she left!

I always say - give'm what they want. image

In fact, the phrase "stamp or coin" was still being widely used
in mailorder during the 70s; maybe beyond.

As a ute, I used to send out stamps on approval. About 20%
of the folks paid me in U.S. Postage Stamps.

17 cent stamps??? What are those from 1971 or what?
  • 17 cent stamps are still being printed. The second ounce is 17 cents so if you have an item that weighs 1.1OZ the postage will be 59 cents.
  • billwaltonsbeardbillwaltonsbeard Posts: 3,748 ✭✭✭✭
ah, had no idea. I havent bought a stamp in years.
  • I only know because I mailed a TTM out today that weighed 1.1 ounce.

Back in the '80s my dad bought and sold a lot of gold and silver. It would be common for him to receive a couple 100oz silver bars in the mail. The mailman always busted my dad's chops about it. The silver would come in a small box literally covered with stamps. The guy who shipped that way would take stamps as payment.

However, this is 25 years later. If you are an ebay buyer, get a freakin' paypal account!!!

Was the wantlist over the top Perry? I really thought on our next deal I could pay in foreign obsolete aluminum coins if that's cool.

Im going to buy something off Perry and pay in Canadian half cents

    JS
  • I would personally never send stamps as payment but to me it really isn't a big deal. I have gotten them from buyers before and I just use them when shipping something. The guy didn't commit a crime or anything. Probably just an old school collector who is used to the old days when that kind of thing was common practice. Honestl;y if it were me and it bothered me so much I would just email the guy and tell him in the future to please not mail stamps as I don't use them for postage. He would probably not do it again and you still have a good relationship with a customer.

We send statements of account to all our customers with past due accounts every month. We put a (now) $.42 stamp on all the envelopes.
I decided to take a closer look at the statements the last few months. Some of them amounted to under $1. I noticed one account had an open invoice from 2006. It was 50 cents overdue. I figure we spent at least $10 in stamps trying to collect $.50. We almost broke even by not sending him a statement for July.
