My "Biggest" addition to my Take me out sheet music! An ORIGINAL recording from 1908! Wh

Just in and I'm so pleased!

As you know - I have 21 of the 23 variations to "Take me out to the ball game" - again the HOF says there's 11 - I've catalogued 23!

Now - interestingly - this is a 1908 Edison cylinder recording by the baritone Edward Meeker - of interest - there's no sheet music with his pic that I've seen as yet - but stay tuned! image

I've been tracking these recordings for 2 or 3 yrs - always getting beat out - but this was worth the wait. Why? Because of the "LID" - the others had no writing or the song name poorly written in - my guess? The original was lost and they put the cylinder in a generic empty tube.

This one has the "manufacturer's" label - and still in tremendous shape - notice also how the name of the song is imprinted onto the cylinder and the cylinder number matches the number on the label:

Here's the cylinder and the graphics on the container - which is in top notch shape!

This is a great hobby moment for me - I couldn't be happier if I were twins! image

Thanx for viewing

Very nice Mike. I'm happy for you!

I do have a question though. If you were twins, who would keep the collection, you or the other dude?

Mike, thanks for sharing your new pickup. That's a really remarkable find. Glad to see that your diligence and patience paid off.
  • I have read previous threads you posted about this collection and I am very impressed. More impressed with your persistence. My adult ADD would not allow me to continue with that kind of quest. I would have to.......Oh look! A squirrell!

Amazing stuff stone... the original record itself would be impressive, but the total package is just incredible considering its 100 years old.

One question though, why didn't you just buy one when they first came out, ya' old bastid!

Congrats to you and I eagerly away number 22 & 23 to be added to your collection.

how does that play. Is it a tube, or a flat vinyl record? I was looking at your scans and I couldnt figure out how it works.

found this on google, called an edison phonograph, looks like a "tube" fits in there

Even my wife is impressed . . . and she usually couldn't care less about the stuff I tell her about from these boards.

I know it is really what you collect, but I think the Post Office is celebrating the 100th anniversary of this song by issuing special stamps. Have you checked those out yet?

    Yes, thanx.

Nightcrawler - I've posted before about the song - it was written by Jack Norworth in 1908 - he was riding the subway and saw an ad for a game at the Polo Grounds and wrote the song in - he said - about 15 minutes.

A close friend and vaudevillian Von Tilzer put the lyrics to music.

Ironically neither of them had ever been to the ML game!

I've got a full article in the works - but not ready to finalize it.

    Thanx again guys!

Great find, Mike. I just listened to the recording. I don't think I had ever heard the second verse. Very interesting.

  • Mike,

I really like your "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" collection. It is the merging of my two favorite collecting interests - baseball and music. I collect music themed cards and baseball cards. But, I never thought about merging the two. I would love to see a layout of the music sheets that you have acquired. How long have you been at it? Do you know if there is a corresponding music sheet to your Edison cylinder? Now you need the Edison phonograph.

That is INCREDIBLE! Congrats on that find, Mike! I hate to ask people what they paid for things but this is so unique...what does something like this normally sell for? I dont think you could have found a better one! That is incredible for a piece that is over 100 years old!

    Thanx David.

I doubt there's sheet music for the Edison recording. I've been collecting the sheet music for 4 yrs now - I've even corresponded with the HOF - but they sent me reference stuff that was copied and it's hard to see some of the pics on the sheet music.

If I had the room - I would consider displaying the cylinder in a player but don't have room.

    Don't mind at all.

I paid 281 bucks on ebay - I think it was 290 with shipping and insurance.

The last one went for 276 - and this one is far nicer. The cheapest one had no container and went for around 90 bucks.

Mike nice pick up. Those cylinders were cheap back in the 80's (around 15.00) what do they go for now?

    Thanx Steve.

Most still go for very little money but this one is a bit different - as I said before, I've seen these without the box for around 80-90 bucks and with the box in the 200+ range. The last one I missed went for 276 bucks with a box but no label - this one went for 281 bucks - and definitely the nicest I've seen. I'm a lucky guy!
