Question For Lawnmowerman Re Emmitt Smith Card

Matt,

Up for auction here is a 2002 SP Authentic Sign Of The Times Emmitt Smith BGS 9. Seller has a $500.00 price tag and is accepting offers. Just curious, how rare is this card and what kind of value would you place on the card. Thanks.

Hope you don't mind me butting in but it says right in the description that it is a SP and #'d to 77

    Dave,

Oh! Of course not. Thanks for the information.

I just directed this thread to Matt because I believe he has an inordinate amount of knowledge on all things related to Emmitt Smith.

  • Emmitt Smith? I thought he played for the Cardinals.image
Take it what it's worth but the Standard Catalog has this card listed for $200 and The Card Collector has it listed for $250. I believe $500 is just a little too much.
  • I just can not fathom how somebody could "pull" for a guy when he states " I am a diamond surronded by trash." That has to be one of the most egotistical things ever to come out of an athletes mouth......Would the true greatest running back of all time, Barry Sanders state such an assinine comment? Sanders was class on and off the field. Just my 2 cents......
  • I will repeat a story about Emmitt that I have shared with Matt. In my previous career (casino), I dealt craps to Mr Smith and Terry Glenn. This was about 10 years ago, long before Glenn was a Cowboy. For 8 hours I dealt to both of them and they were as friendly as they could be. Emmitt drew a crowd and politely signed autos off and on all night for anyone that had the nerve to walk up and ask for one.

I like these stories...its nice to hear about super stars acting like normal human beings...I've met Emmit as well (close friend of mine's father was his accountant) and he really is a stand up guy.

Yeah, I agree with Jay, the card is priced way too high. Being that it's in a 9 slab, I wouldn't pay more than $150 for it.

I use to have this quote in my sig:
"In Dallas we had a hand full of diamonds and some poo poo. When you mixed the diamonds with the poo poo the diamonds began to look like poo poo too." I believe you didn't quite get the quote right or the meaning.

I thought I remembered seeing that Jay.

It's sad how people twist things to suit their own misguided opinions.
  • +1 for saying poo poo three times in one post.
    Tonya
  • +1 for saying "poo poo too"

would have got a +2 for adding WOOHOO!!

Well the quote that I'm thinking of he was referring to the early to mid 90's but I did find a Redskins message board saying that he felt the last year with Dallas he was surrounded by trash. I'll try to find a dependable source regarding that quote but I can't recall ever hearing him say that.
    More Editing:
I did find this from SI.com which doesn't sound too good:
Everyone says things they wish they could take back
  • Emmitt actually did say the quote that Flintboy mentioned but cmon cut Emmitt a little slack here.

He said it after he went to Arizona and he didn't leave Dallas on the best of terms. Haven't we all said things that we regret later on

Emmitt was a class guy for many years in Dallas and i don't recall ever hearing him get in any trouble off the field
  • Here is an article where he explains himself:
He said he was misunderstood, or something

<< <i>Emmitt Smith, who didn’t play Saturday, clarified his Sports Illustrated quote that “it felt like being a diamond surrounded by trash” playing for the Cowboys last year.“That statement meaning that the Cowboys are a diamond organization,” Smith said. “The trash is the way we played. The individuals down in Dallas are just trying to make a bigger story out of it than it should be. That’s my final comment on it.” >>

+3 for adding "I am the walrus Coo coo kachoo ka coo coo kachoo"

  • I didnt "twist" things to my liking. I just simply repeated a quote that "the player" actually said. I think "the player" is a great running back. That being said... I just respect athletes more like Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, etc, who conduct themselves on and off the field in a little bit of a classier manner.

I realize that you didnt twist anything. I was thinking of a different quote that Jay dug up, so I apologize for that.

I do however have a problem with you saying Emmitt wasn't classy off the field, that is bunch of gabage. He was one of the classiest players to ever play imo.

Question for you. How classy was Barry when he walked out on his teamates and the city of Detroit?

Agreed Matt, - Im curious what he means by this myself.
  • Off the field??? Are you sure you want to go that route lawnmower man? Just for starters how many fun babies does "the player" have? I remember him opening up his trap and sticking his foot into it with some distasteful Michael Vick comments. While we are on the subject of comments, is there a reason he got bounced from ESPN? He has a four year degree but still cant grasp the english language.....Need me to keep going?????

Sure keep going and answer the question you're avoiding.

    Just in case you missed it;

Just how classy was Barry when he walked out on his teamates and the City of Detroit?

Matt I think he is just angry that when Barry got upset he just quit. He blames Emmitt for having a better career- you know, like being a major contributor to Super Bowl wins and salting away the all time rushing yards mark.
  • Matt, You know if you played for Detroit you would have bailed too image

    I agree Paul.

Flintboy, do you plan on answering the question?
