OT: Hoosiers

I'm watching Hoosiers on Encore right now which I've seen at least a dozen times. What a great movie! I'd have to place it in my top 5 sports movies of all time. Would you agree??

Im sure this will stir some feathers but i dont like this movie. It's pretty much sumed up as we cant win without our best player. Just seems weird how that can be so inspirational to me.

1 - Field of Dreams ("Hey dad...wanna have a catch?") beats out #2 simply because of that line. What a great film
2 - Raging Bull
3 - Hoosiers
4 - Hoop Dreams
5 - Rocky (although its getting more dated by the day)
6 - Million Dollar Baby
7 - Caddyshack
8 - Rudy
9 - When We Were Kings
10 - Pride of the Yankees

Notes - I hate Bull Durham. I'm a Red Sox fan so I can't rank Pride of the Yankees higher (although it should be a bit higher). Knute Rockne All American is so campy. Rocky is really dated. Hoop Dreams is really NOT dated. I know it came out in 94 but it's could have happened this year. I know I'm missing a few but this is off the cuff.

Edited to add - others in consideration that miss the cut - Follow the Sun, Slap Shot, Miracle, National Velvet, Seabiscuit

I see your point but throughout the movie several of the players on the team seemed to come up big to help them get to the state championship. I guess the inspiration comes in when a tiny school beats all the "Big" Schools to win the state championship. I live in Indiana and for the longest time the state basketball tournament wasn't seeded by school size. Small schools played big schools and the best team won the state championship. I wish it was still like that today.

But I do see your point.

Knew I forgot a few Matt. That's what happens when you're trying to do a marketing budget and come up with great sports films at the same time. Unforgivable mistake. Leaving work in a few so I'll edit that later.

Hoosiers wasn't that great. Partly because Gene Hackman was in it. He plays the exact same cynical, peeved character in every movie he ever made. And I mean zero variation. I think all his lines are the same in each movie as well.

The Greatest Game Ever Played, now there's a great sports movie, which is more about the social commentary of the time than anything.

I can watch a movie like Hoosiers once every couple of years. Good performances, but basketball isnt my fav. sport so i doesnt mean as much to me.

Every time The Natural plays on AMC or TNT etc. i wont turn the channel. A story of bad decisions and ultimately redemption. Same with Field of Dreams (which is my all time favorite sports movies as well as any movie) The symbolism and personal meaning in that movie are quite powerful. My Dad and I spent many hours throwing the ball around in the backyard I would give anything to be able to do that again.

I like the movie too.

On a side note, here's something that I'd like to share - when they were filming Hoosiers, a call was put out that extras were needed for the crowd scenes during shooting of the Championship game sequences at the old Hinkle Fieldhouse at Butler University in Indianapolis. My college roommates and I decided that it would be something fun to do, so we drove down from West Lafayette to check it out.

It was a unique experience to say the least. We got period shirts to put on and were sent up to the balcony of the Fieldhouse behind one of the baskets. Some of us were told to cheer for the Hickory team when they would score, and others were told to root for the other team.

All in all, I thought that it was pretty cool to actually see how a movie is shot. The two things that stand out to me about that day was the number of people that showed up (6000+), and that the guy made the winning basket on the first take.

Mike, I could not agree more. Every time I watch the movie with my wife, she looks at me to see if I am crying when that part comes on. I usually am.

I'm not a golf fan, but I have to agree, this movie is a hidden gem. If you haven't seen it you won't be disappointed.

LOVE Hoosiers. Get the 2-disc version of it - they include the entire game that the movie is based on as an extra on the set.

My list would look something like this:

1) Miracle - Well-made look at the greatest moment in US sports
2) Hoosiers
3) Mystery, Alaska - I love the way they treat hockey in this one - lots of respect - and that they don't go for the cheap feel-good ending
4) Eight Men Out - Excellent telling of the famous scandal

Those four are a clear cut above the rest of the crowd for me. The rest aren't as easy to pick:

5) For Love of the Game - hey, Costner is a Tiger; that alone makes it great

6) Happy Gilmore - Bob Barker beating up Adam Sandler? Sold!
7) Rocky - I love 'em all - yes, even #5
8) Bull Durham - My brother-in-law actually played for the Durham Bulls and he says this movie perfectly captures the essence of minor league baseball
9) Karate Kid - Sure, it's cheesy but the relationship between Daniel & Mr. Miyagi is great. Plus, Elizabeth Shue!
10) Field of Dreams - love this one but it bugs me that Shoeless Joe bats right-handed in it

This list is definitely subject to change at any given moment as I remember or forget movies
