Roger Maris Autographed Baseball?

I bought a wooden safe deposit box that was labeled "Bank Drawer Plus Contents" at the weekly auction house
near me. It had the usual family stuff...a hand-written family recipe book, some old photos, a hand-written letter
about moving to Texas, a tin full of marbles and an old worn-out 1958 baseball with an autograph.

I don't know much about baseball, so I memorized the signature and went home to do some research on the
computer. I guess 1958 was Roger's rookie year and the signature seemed to closely resemble the ones I
could find. So, I went back to the auction to bid on the "Bank Drawer Plus Contents" and won it for $44.

Am I nuts?image

How would I get this authenticated.....Or did I get screwed?image

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I post on the US Coin forum and this is unchartered territory for me.

Have to say that doesn't look like most Maris sigs I've seen.

    Could be a rookie signature....

    the 1958 stamp is interesting!

You might want to spend the money for a Quick Opinion from PSA/DNA .

    Good luck!

BTW I think you have to "create" an ebay auction for a quick opinion, no big deal but I dont see any other way to do it.

It very well may be an early sig with a faulty pen...I'd definitely seek a professional opinion.

his REALLY early signatures (e.g. pre-MLB), he signed his last name "Maras"
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

    Thanks for the feedback guys!
I'm getting a professional opinion and we'll go from there.

Came out of Central Florida...could be a Spring training ball? Looks pretty well used.

I'll update the thread when I get the opinion.

    Thanks again!

Out of curiosity (seriously). why would someone back in 1958, actually stamp a ball 1958? (unless it was someone recently who wanted to "age" a ball). I hope it's legit, but I suppose I'm still too much of a cynic. Looks like a ball out of a Coaches Corner Auction actually.

Thanks again for all of your input, help and suggestions!

Word came back today that it took a close look but, it would NOT get the nod of
approval to be certified at PSA.

    Bummer!

Thanks again, and if any of your sports card and memorabilia guys ever get into Eisenhower Dollars,
just let me know. I am part of "The Ike Group" and we certify different rarities and varieties of Ike Dollars.

    Respectfully,
