Ron Burgundy: reporting live from The National

This is Ron Burgundy reporting live from the National. Here is my report:

Traffic was average. Many dealers said this and I agree. It didn't suck it was just average. There were not long lines at the door on opening.

Dealers were somewhat willing to deal. By that I mean not everything they had was twenty percent over SMR. They would at least listen.

Grades being handed out by all three grading companies were RIDICULOUS. I saw some stuff that had been graded and it was off by one to THREE grades. Insane.

I had limited time to look and had to dig dig dig to find anything. But I did find some sweet 62 high numbers that will make Bosox76 drool. Scans later this week.

Lots of talk about the Federalies attending the show. Most seem to think its only the beginning.

I sold some stuff at decent prices.

I'm out. I'm in. I'm out. I'm in. I need a scorecard to keep track if Ron's staying in the hobby, or quitting it.

Sure. Word around the convention floor was that on site grading was brutal. And I saw the submission results from one dealer where he got drilled: 6's that could've been 8's, etc. Not just PSA, even GLOBAL was being tough.

    Update on the scorecard:

    In: 1

    Out: 1

Like Harvey Dent, looks like I'll have to flip to break the tie.

When you say you "sold some stuff at decent prices"... would you care saying what % of SMR or Beckett that was? Can't wait for the scans.

Nick, what's your address I will send you the memo? Do you need the supporting position statement?

Thanks for the update Ron. I like to go to the National one of these days. I am in the DC metro area and I am wishing
for an East Coast site in the next few years.

I would love to go one of these days too. Hopefully it'll make it to Atlanta or further south one of these days... but I doubt it.

No imbroglio, did a good job of avoiding certain evil dealers.

Any hey, if this is my last rodeo, attending the National was fitting. Like an girlfriend you're about to dump, always nice to grab one last piece of that arse on the way out..........

To add to Ron's post, I was there four days........ not many deals, a lot of full retail PSA cards were displayed, many over smr. My impression was most dealers didn't seem to want to deal at all on prices.

Lot's of vintage Baseball was available as to be expected at this show, not much in vintage graded football to be found.

I felt the grading companies were all very tough on grading, bumps, and crossovers. Very tight grading at the show as compared to past Nationals.

Attendance seemed slightly down but that was hard to judge considering the room size.

Less and less kids attending these shows, and that's too bad.

thats exactly what will kill this hobby. They have lost the young collectors, first by over-saturation and then by over-pricing artificially scarce cards.

Most of what I sold was garden variety PSA 8 stuff and some old GAI stuff most of which I was able to unload at 65-80 percent of SMR which was fine with me.

yep, apparently many seem to think that Mastro will point to one fall guy to take the hit.......who that might be I have no clue.

Also, word was Derek Grady got somewhat mouthy with the Feds when they showed up. Not a career enhancing move in my opinion.

No way!! There are plenty of young collectors buying today's products!! What kid wouldnt want to pay $5,000 for cards with pubes of dead presidents and extinct animals?? Or spend thousands of dollars trying to complete a base set because some of the RCs are short printed autos??

It's ALL about the kids mang!!!

I agree on the vintage football but I was able to get 21 cards PSA 7 or better for my 71 FB set. There were some "good" prices a few "great" prices but mostly at or above SMR for most PSA stuff and pre war was all over the board. I was going to conduct an experiment to see what the average, min and max for a PSA 3 and PSA 4 Red T206 Cobb (there was plenty of each grade at the show) as some dealers were asking 2K for a PSA 3.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set
  • Derek Grady, very interesting.
I grew up with him. Well, what i mean is he had a very small card shop in Johnstown PA and had allot of dealings with my brother who also had a card shop in the area He then went on to work for SGC and then Mastro. I last talked to him a few years ago @ the Philly show and he seemed different. He acted like I was wasting his time and I picked up on it and just moved on. That's fine with me I didn't let my success change who I was. He is an interesting person in this whole investigation.

That's not surprising. He got mouthy with me when I called him out for over grading a raw set. Remember the customer is always wrong and thanks for spending your $$$ with us.

Doesn't look good for some of the big names in the hobby, especially on the auction side.

  • I think Baltimore is 2010. Lee, you might still be alive. Or, you could always do Cleveland next year.

Quick question. Why was there no Topps booth? Anyone find that strange? Are the feds after the Rip Master?
